Karan Johar is back in the headlines after securing interim relief in a legal dispute linked to a roast video uploaded on YouTuber Ajey Nagar’s channel, better known as Carry Minati. The case has placed Karan Johar at the centre of a broader debate over how allegedly defamatory clips continue to circulate online through reposts and mirrors, even after an original upload is challenged.
The filmmaker, who is also widely known for hosting Koffee With Karan, moved a Mumbai court objecting to a video titled Coffee With Jalan. In his suit, Johar alleged that the roast drew on the format and identity of his chat show and included abusive and derogatory remarks aimed at him, including references connected to nepotism.
Mumbai Court Grants Interim Injunction
In the latest development, the Mumbai court granted an ad interim injunction restraining Ajey Nagar, Meta Platforms, and other associated parties from publishing, re publishing, circulating, or re circulating any content described as objectionable or defamatory against Karan Johar. The order was passed on Monday, February 9, after the court heard Johar’s grievance linked to Coffee With Jalan.
At this stage, the court observed that, on a prima facie view, the material appeared defamatory and warranted immediate protection. The order also directed that the allegedly defamatory video be taken down, while restraining the defendants from making or sharing similar content until the court issues further directions.
“Prima facie it appears that the Ajey Nagar and Deepak Char (manager of Carry Minati channel) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff. These videos need to be taken down immediately. There should be injunction against all those who circulate and re-circulate these videos on the social media platform. This is fit case to pass ad-interim injunction orders against the defendants,” Judge Pandurang Bhosale said in the ad-interim order passed on February 9.
John Doe Order Covers Reuploads
Along with naming the creator and the platform, the court also issued a John Doe order. In disputes involving online content, such orders are typically aimed at ensuring directions can extend to unidentified accounts that may upload, mirror, or re share the same material.
The move addresses a common problem in digital takedown battles: even if the original video is removed, the same content can continue spreading through reposts, clips, and reuploads across multiple accounts and platforms.
What The Case Means Going Forward
For now, the interim protection remains in place until the court hears the matter further and issues additional directions. As proceedings continue, both sides are expected to file more detailed arguments and material on record.
After considering those submissions, the court may confirm the interim relief, alter its scope, or set it aside. Until then, the injunction and takedown directions form the operative framework governing how the allegedly defamatory Coffee With Jalan content can be hosted, circulated, or re circulated.
