Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary is beginning to find real momentum in India after an uneven start, and Sunday gave the film its strongest signal yet. The sci-fi drama earned Rs 5.8 crore on day four, pushing its India total to Rs 17.28 crore and bringing it within touching distance of the Rs 18 crore mark. The jump matters because the film had opened amid limited premium show access and intense competition for screens.
That local rise is now sitting alongside an even bigger global headline. The film has crossed $300 million worldwide in 10 days, with the latest industry figures placing its worldwide total at $300.8 million, or roughly Rs 2,837 crore. That makes it one of the standout theatrical performers of 2026 so far, and a major win for original studio sci-fi.
Project Hail Mary Gains Ground In India
The India trend shows a clear upward curve. Project Hail Mary opened at Rs 2.8 crore on Thursday, rose to Rs 3.33 crore on Friday, then climbed to Rs 5.35 crore on Saturday before adding Rs 5.8 crore on Sunday. The Sunday push came as the film expanded its show count and benefited from stronger English occupancy in key urban centres.

Day 2: 2.75 cr,
Day 3: 4.40 cr
Day 4: 4.70 cr
India Total: ₹ 14.15 cr.
One of the biggest talking points around the release has been screen allocation. The film had initially struggled to secure enough premium slots, especially in IMAX, but audience interest appears to have forced a correction. Its number of shows grew from 1,324 on opening day to 1,634 over the following days, helping the film build a steadier run at the Indian box office.
A $300 Million Breakout Changes The Game
Globally, Project Hail Mary has now turned into a genuine box office event. The film reached $300.8 million worldwide by the end of its second weekend, overtaking Creed III to become Amazon MGM Studios’ highest-grossing film to date. For a non-franchise original, that is a notable achievement in the current theatrical climate.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel and follows Ryland Grace, a science teacher who wakes up alone aboard a spacecraft and gradually realises he is on a mission to save Earth. Alongside Gosling, the film features Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub.
Speaking about the film’s scale, Gosling said, “It’s an insanely ambitious story that’s massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that’s kind of our bag.” He added, “This is why we go to the movies. And I’m not just saying it because I’m in it, I’m also saying it because I’m a producer on the film.”
Why This Marks A Big-Screen Reset For Gosling
With Project Hail Mary now surging theatrically, the film also feels like a defining reminder of Gosling’s pull as a big-screen star. Before this release, his last screen outing was Netflix’s The Gray Man in 2022, an action thriller directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and co-starring Chris Evans, Ana de Armas and Dhanush.
That gap makes Project Hail Mary more significant than a routine hit. It marks Gosling’s latest confirmed theatrical release as of March 2026 and places him at the centre of an original studio spectacle that has connected both critically and commercially. At a time when original event films are far from guaranteed, this run has given Gosling one of the strongest theatrical headlines of his recent career.
