In a move to crackdown on illegal constructions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reportedly began demolishing the remaining five illegal film studios at Madh, Malad on April 7. This action comes after the National Green Tribunal dismissed an appeal filed by the illegal studio owners against a BMC showcase notice to discontinue operations.

Earlier, six studios had been demolished, but the remaining five had obtained a stay. The BMC had ordered an inquiry into the unauthorised construction of studios at Madh, Marve, Erangal, and Bhati villages of Malad in a September 2022 order. There were allegations that thousands of square metres of studios were built without proper permissions, using fraudulent documents with the help of officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority.
The BMC had earlier stayed its 2019 circular, which allowed the raising of temporary structures on private land for erecting film studios, citing loopholes in the same. This was also a reason why the National Green Tribunal dismissed the studio owners’ petition.
The demolition of the illegal film studios is a significant step towards preserving the environment and ensuring that construction is carried out only with proper permissions. The BMC’s action is expected to send a strong message to those who try to flout the law and carry out illegal constructions.
