After a thunderous start at the box office, the Rajinikanth starrer Coolie is now facing a sharp decline during the weekdays. Directed by hitmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film has gone into a state of freefall, with collections dropping significantly each day, putting a big question mark on its final box office verdict.
From A Bumper Opening To A Weekday Crash
Coolie opened to near-record numbers, collecting a massive Rs. 75.50 crore on its first day. The extended weekend saw strong figures, but the film’s momentum completely collapsed as the weekdays began. The collections saw a steep decline of over 25 per cent on Wednesday, bringing in just Rs. 7.25 crore. This daily figure is less than 10 per cent of its opening day collection, highlighting a worrying trend for the big-budget film. The total India gross after seven days stands at approximately Rs. 255.50 crore, with the extended first week expected to close around the Rs. 260-261 crore mark.
Global Collections And Revised Expectations
The film’s performance in overseas markets tells a similar story. After a promising weekend of USD 16.75 million, the collections are now merely crawling. On Wednesday, it managed to collect only around USD 250K from international circuits. At this pace, the film will struggle to cross the USD 20 million mark in its full run. The total worldwide gross currently stands at Rs. 411 crore. With the daily numbers dropping so sharply, the initial expectation of crossing the prestigious Rs. 500 crore mark is now out of reach.
Is The ‘HIT’ Tag In Trouble?
While the box office numbers are substantial, they may not be enough to secure a clean ‘HIT’ status for Coolie. The film was mounted on a massive budget, and expectations were sky-high given the director’s incredible track record with previous blockbusters. By Sunday, it was clear the film wouldn’t meet those lofty expectations, but it still seemed on track to be a successful venture. However, the weekday crash has changed the narrative completely. The film needed a much stronger hold to justify its costs, and its current trajectory puts its HIT status in doubt.
