Raj Kapoor’s 1951 Classic Awara Gets 4K Restoration, To Be Screened At Toronto International Film Festival 2024 On THIS Date

Raj Kapoor‘s legendary 1951 film Awara is making a grand return to the big screen in a stunning 4K restoration, just in time for his 100th birth anniversary. The National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC) revealed this exciting news on August 26.

This newly restored version of Awara will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) under the prestigious TIFF Classics section, making it a significant moment for Indian cinema.

The film, a black-and-white masterpiece that co-stars Nargis and Prithviraj Kapoor, has been meticulously restored by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI). This project is part of the National Film Heritage Mission, which is supported by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Raj Kapoor’s Awara To Be Screened At TIFF 2024 Next Month

The 4K restoration of Awara will be screened at TIFF on September 13, allowing a new generation of cinephiles to experience the magic of Raj Kapoor’s storytelling.

Kunal Kapoor, Raj Kapoor’s nephew and son of Shashi Kapoor, played a key role in the restoration, lending his expertise to the colour grading process. His efforts ensured that the film retains its timeless essence while also embracing a modern touch.

About The Film

Awara, produced and directed by Raj Kapoor himself, tells the story of Raj, a young man from a poor background who gets pulled into a life of crime to support his mother. His fate changes when he meets the wealthy Rita, played by Nargis, leading him on a journey of self-discovery and redemption. The film is known for its strong socialist themes, the iconic song “Awaara Hoon,” and its international success.

The film was not only a major hit in India but also gained global recognition, even competing for the Palme d’Or at the 1951 Cannes Film Festival. Its restoration and screening at TIFF mark a significant celebration of Indian cinema, highlighting the enduring impact of Raj Kapoor’s work.
