Ranveer Singh’s family connections have long intrigued Bollywood enthusiasts, especially his link to the Kapoor family through his mother, Anju Bhavnani, who happens to be the first cousin of Sunita Kapoor, Anil Kapoor‘s wife.
However, there’s a lesser-known aspect of his lineage worth exploring. Did you know that Ranveer’s grandmother, Chand Burke, was a notable actress in the 1940s and even shared the screen with the legendary actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor?
About Ranveer Singh’s Grandmother Chand Burke
Chand Burke, fondly referred to as the ‘Dancing Lily of Punjab’ before Independence, embarked on her cinematic journey in Punjab, showcasing her talent in several Punjabi films as a child actor.
However, it was her debut in Bollywood with Raj Kapoor’s 1954 release, Boot Polish, that propelled her to fame. Her portrayal of a villainous aunt in the movie earned acclaim from both critics and audiences.
Born into a Christian family as the youngest of 12 siblings, Chand Burke’s passion for dancing paved her way to stardom. After relocating to Mumbai post-independence, she exhibited her versatility in various Bollywood films, including Basant Bahar, Adalat, Kahin Din Kahin Raat, and Sohni Mahiwal.
Chand Burke’s Personal & Professional Life
In her personal life, Chand Burke’s journey was equally remarkable. After divorcing film writer Niranjan in 1954, the same year as her Bollywood debut, she married businessman Sundar Singh Bhavnani.
Their union blessed them with two children, Tonya and Jagjit. Jagjit’s marriage to Anju Bhavnani eventually led to the birth of Ranveer Singh, who has since become one of Bollywood’s most renowned and talented actors.
