Throwback: When Yash Chopra’s Violent Love Story Darr Became Craze Of National, Shah Rukh Khan Zindabad Slogans Echoed In Cinemas

Yash Chopra’s Darr made Shah Rukh Khan a national sensation in 1993. But did you know Aamir, Salman, and Ajay Devgn were offered the obsessive lover's role first?

In 1993, Yash Chopra‘s Darr came out and changed the notion of a Bollywood hero. Starring Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, the obsessive lover who keeps chanting K-K-Kiran, it was not only a box office smash but also a turning point in the career of SRK.

However, what many do not know is that Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn have all been contacted before Shah Rukh to portray the villain in the movie — and all turned it down.

Aamir Khan On Why He Passed On Darr

Aamir Khan was originally set to portray Rahul, but eventually he walked away from the role due to creative differences. Years later, Aamir said in an interview:

“I was going to do Darr, but I didn’t for other reasons. Shah Rukh was just right for it. The spirit, which Yashji wanted me to capture in it, failed. I don’t regret it.”

Reportedly, Aamir was asking for joint narration sessions (with his castmate who is probably Sunny Deol), and the relationships ruptured. Eventually, he erased himself from the project, full stop.

Salman Khan & Ajay Devgn Also Said No

Reportedly, after Aamir stepped out, Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan were offered the role next, and they both declined, possibly because of the anti-hero elements of the role, which in the early ’90s was somewhat extreme and risky for mainstream heroes.

It is at this point that Shah Rukh Khan entered the fray, relatively new to cinema and only a few films old. What followed from that point is a performance that took him from rising star to a moment in pop culture.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Villainous Rahul: The Birth Of A Cult Icon

SRK’s portrayal of the disturbed, love-sick character of Rahul was captivating, and he delivered the “I love you, K-K-Kiran” line as an absolute benchmark, not seen before and certainly never repeated.

Shah Rukh Khan’s interpretation dragged down Sunny Deol’s lead hero characterisation despite the latter’s more definitive screen time.

The reports of cinemas being filled with “Shah Rukh Khan Zindabad” chants were widespread, and Darr gleefully put him in league with actors who defied the normal notions of heroism.

A National Phenomenon, A New Hero Definition

Darr was not just a movie; it was a societal reset. It gave us a Bollywood hero where obsession was the motive, and not justice.

Yes, the story’s premise of horror-stalking and love of possession has been criticised subsequently, but at that time, Rahul was a phenomenon, and Darr became a genre-defining romantic thriller.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Years down the line, Darr wasn’t just a film that Shah Rukh Khan starred in — it was the film that Shah Rukh Khan owned. The fact that three major actors refused it only makes his gamble and eventual reward that much more remarkable.

From an outsider to Bollywood — to the most unconventional superstar of an eraDarr became the defining flashpoint in SRK’s formative years and Indian cinema’s formulation of a hero.
