After facing delays and a less exciting promotion, Emraan Hashmi’s awaited patriotic thriller Ground Zero released this week, and from early figures, it is getting off to an unstable start at the box office.
According to industry estimates, Ground Zero was only able to bank ₹1 crore nett on Day 1, which marks a slow start at the box office considering its theme and patriotic context. Directed by Tejas Vijay Deoskar, Ground Zero received a limited release with very little competition in cinemas, and footfall numbers were disappointing.

A Patriotic Tale With A Quiet Opening
Ground Zero tells the tale of a selfless BSF officer navigating a threatening scenario in Kashmir; it was a dynamic premise, although there is a little complex situation of an internal struggle along with patriotism, but indeed it’s subjective. However, one expects to see the summary and contribution of how excessive bordering dilemmas and moral dilemmas all come together — here we encounter great possibilities!
Emraan Hashmi, who has steadily progressed in his performances over the years, delivers a thoughtful, grounded performance.
Nevertheless, with a previously discussed topic and Hashmi’s honest portrayal, the film has not made strong impressions on board offers. Multiplexes in metros were showing less than 10% occupancy — without a considerable amount of interest around single screens.
Slow Start, But Is Word-of-Mouth A Possibility?
Industry experts suggest Ground Zero was always set up to open with subdued expectations based on the noncommittal marketing and niche value of the film. The pacing and serious tone may have turned off a potential Friday audience, especially younger audiences who are drawn to lighter fare.
There is some optimism: Reviews of the film’s emotional weight and performances have generally been very positive, which may provide word-of-mouth momentum through the weekend, although a massive turnaround is highly unlikely.
Emraan Hashmi: In Between OTT Highs And Theatrical Lows
While Ground Zero is playing poorly in theatres, Hashmi has had a better time at OTT. His performances in Showtime on Disney+ Hotstar and his involvement in Tiger 3 sparked positive attention last year. But his personal ventures to theatres have not returned to the momentum he enjoyed in the 2010s.
This is a continuing trend with mid-budget, serious-toned films, which have also struggled to break through theatrically in the post-pandemic era — unless they have a tonne of positive pre-release buzz or have gone viral with a marketing strategy.
