Manoj Bajpayee’s latest theatrical outing has ended on a disappointing note. Governor, the financial thriller fronted by the actor, wrapped its run in India with a final nett collection of Rs 5 crore, capping off a box office journey that never found the lift required to stay in the conversation for long.
The film opened with curiosity around its unusual subject and Bajpayee’s commanding screen presence, but that early attention did not convert into sustained footfalls. Mixed reception quickly slowed its momentum, and the film was unable to build the kind of word-of-mouth support that often rescues niche dramas after opening weekend. The result is a final tally that places Governor among the weaker theatrical performers in Bajpayee’s recent filmography.
The Final Box Office Verdict
The film’s theatrical run has now closed at Rs 5 crore nett in India, confirming its flop status. A trade update observed, “Had the movie received a positive reception, it might have seen a better run.” The same update added, “One must note that there were some external factors too, which aided its theatrical run in the initial days.”
Even with that brief push, Governor could not hold steady once the initial phase passed. Audience response never gathered enough force to translate into healthy week-on-week growth, and the film slipped out before it could establish itself as a durable adult-oriented thriller. For a project led by an actor of Bajpayee’s standing, that gap between credibility and commercial pull has become increasingly visible on the big screen.
Directed by Chinmay D. Mandlekar, Governor was produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah under Sunshine Pictures. The 2026 Hindi financial thriller featured Adah Sharma and Noushad Mohamed Kunju alongside Bajpayee, and was set against the backdrop of the 1990 Indian economic crisis.
Manoj Bajpayee’s Recent And Upcoming Work
The fate of Governor also feeds into a broader pattern in Manoj Bajpayee’s recent career, where acclaim and audience trust have remained intact, but theatrical conversions have been harder to secure. In cinemas, Bhaiyya Ji in 2024 and Jugnuma: The Fable in 2025 also failed to emerge as strong commercial performers, reinforcing the challenge of turning his performance-led vehicles into box office successes.
That contrast becomes sharper when viewed alongside his OTT trajectory. Bajpayee continued to command attention on streaming with Despatch on ZEE5 in 2024, while his recent released work also included Joram in 2023, Silence 2: The Night Owl Bar Shootout in 2024, and Inspector Zende in 2025. His strongest current momentum clearly lies in long-form and digital storytelling, where his intensity and versatility consistently find a wider response.
Looking ahead, the actor remains active across formats. Ghooskhor Pandat is listed for 2026, while Police Station Mein Bhoot remains in production. The Family Man Season 3 has also been officially announced, keeping Bajpayee firmly in focus even as Governor exits theatres with a limp finish.
