Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has delivered a major India box office moment, crossing the lifetime total of Oppenheimer in just 13 days and underlining how powerfully the film has connected with audiences in the country. The film’s surge has not just been about scale or star value. It has been driven by an unusually strong IMAX turnout that has turned premium-format viewing into the headline story of its run.
The Latest India Box Office Milestone
As of July 29, The Odyssey had collected Rs. 132.65 crores in India, moving past the Rs. 128.46 crores earned by Oppenheimer over its full theatrical run. That makes Nolan’s latest release one of the fastest-rising Hollywood performers in the market this year, and it has achieved that mark with a strikingly premium-heavy revenue mix.
Out of its Rs. 132.65 crore India total, The Odyssey has earned Rs. 48.25 crores from just 34 IMAX screens. In percentage terms, 36.4 percent of the film’s India business has come from that limited IMAX footprint despite a release spanning more than 2,000 screens nationwide. The takeaway is sharp and clear: the IMAX format has not just supported the run, it has defined it.
That India response also echoes what Nolan himself said during the film’s Mumbai launch earlier this month, when he described Indian moviegoers as “among the most enthusiastic, knowledgeable cinematic audiences in the world.” The line now feels especially resonant in the context of The Odyssey’s box office performance, where audience demand has translated into exceptionally strong premium-format earnings.
Spider-Man Competition Changes The Screen Game
The arrival of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 30 has altered the exhibition landscape, with cinemas assigning the Marvel release a substantial number of shows across languages and formats. That shift has reduced the showcasing available to The Odyssey in standard screens.
Even with that change, The Odyssey stands at Rs. 132.65 crores in India as of July 29, with its IMAX performance continuing to be the biggest cushion in its theatrical run. The premium-screen hold gives the film a clear advantage at a point when competition for showcasing has intensified.
Why The Odyssey Has Hit Differently In India
Part of the film’s India-specific appeal was built well before release. Nolan personally brought The Odyssey to Mumbai on July 10 and July 11 with Matt Damon and Tom Holland, turning the campaign into his first major India premiere for a film. That visibility gave the release an event status that few Hollywood titles manage to achieve in the market.
The film, released on July 17, 2026, stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Backed by Universal Pictures and produced under Syncopy, The Odyssey is a mythic action epic based on Homer’s classic poem, but in India, its biggest strength has been simpler: audiences have treated it like a must-watch theatrical experience.
