The moment fresh footage from Nitesh Tiwari’s epic dropped on Thursday, July 30, fans zeroed in on a striking detail: Kapoor is not just stepping into Lord Rama, he is also embodying Parashurama.
That reveal is rooted directly in mythology, not cinematic gimmick. Parashurama and Rama are both avatars of Lord Vishnu, with Parashurama regarded as the sixth and Rama as the seventh. Their meeting is one of the defining episodes of the Ramayana, and it fully explains why Kapoor has been positioned in both roles.
The Mythological Link Behind The Double Role
In the traditional telling, Parashurama enters after Rama strings Lord Shiva’s bow, Pinaka, during Sita’s swayamvar. Rama’s touch breaks the bow, provoking Parashurama, a fierce devotee of Shiva. He then confronts Rama on the road back to Ayodhya and challenges him to string Sharanga, the divine bow of Vishnu. When Rama does it effortlessly, Parashurama recognises his divinity and steps aside.

Ramayana is being mounted as a major theatrical franchise by producer Namit Malhotra, with Prime Focus Studios officially presenting it as a two part cinematic event made in association with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The film stars Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana alongside Kapoor, while official studio announcements have positioned the project as a visually ambitious retelling designed for a global audience.
Director Nitesh Tiwari’s own words underline that larger vision. In official studio material unveiling the film, he said, “Ramayana’s greatness lies in its emotional richness. At its heart, it is not just about good and evil, but about choices, consequences, and the weight of doing what is right.” Studio communication has confirmed Part 1 for 2026 and Part 2 for 2027, while widely listed release details place Ramayana: Part 1 in theatres on November 6, 2026, during Diwali.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Recent And Upcoming Work
The trailer lands at a strong moment in Kapoor’s screen journey. His last two theatrical releases, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Animal, both arrived in 2023, with Animal emerging as his highest grossing film to date.
