Twenty years after Malamaal Weekly turned a tiny village and one lottery ticket into a full-blown comedy of errors, the franchise is officially gearing up for a comeback. As of March 2026, a sequel is in development and the biggest change is behind the camera. Priyadarshan, who directed the original 2006 film, is not expected to return to the director’s chair this time.
The new development has instantly sparked curiosity because Malamaal Weekly remains one of those comedies that audiences revisit for its chaotic ensemble energy and the simple, high-stakes premise of a winning ticket that sends everyone into a frenzy. With the sequel now moving forward, the makers appear to be aiming for a familiar flavour, but with a new creative hand steering the ship.
Latest Update On Malamaal Weekly 2
Amit Sharma is currently in talks to direct Malamaal Weekly 2. An insider quoted in the report said, “Amit is in talks to helm the sequel. He is excited to take the franchise ahead.”
The report also notes that Paresh Rawal and other cast members are expected to reprise their roles, including Riteish Deshmukh and Rajpal Yadav. While casting details and the storyline are still under wraps, the intention seems to be to bring back the original gang and retain the spirit of the first film’s madcap humour.
There is another key shift on the business side. The 2006 film was produced by Percept Picture Company and Sahara Motion Pictures, but they are not attached to the sequel, as per the report. Shailendra Singh, who was associated with the original production banner, also addressed the rights situation when contacted. He said Paresh Rawal reached out to him “asking for the sequel’s rights on behalf of an independent producer,” adding that the rights are “placed between Sahara and someone else” and that he does not have “clear documentation” in his possession.
For now, that rights clarity will be one of the crucial pieces needed before the sequel locks its final plan and moves into full-fledged production.
Malamaal Weekly 2 And What’s Known So Far
The original Malamaal Weekly (2006) was directed by Priyadarshan and revolved around a village going into overdrive over a lottery-winning ticket. The sequel is being developed with Amit Sharma in talks to direct and Paresh Rawal expected to return, along with other familiar faces from the first instalment. The producers are not yet officially confirmed, and the rights are currently described as being held between Sahara and another party.
Amit Sharma’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Amit Sharma is best known for directing Badhaai Ho (2018), a film that became a major mainstream success and established his knack for accessible, character-driven humour. He later directed Maidaan (2024), a sports drama headlined by Ajay Devgn. With Malamaal Weekly 2, Sharma appears poised to return to comedy, but within a franchise that comes with strong nostalgia and audience expectations.
