Are We Ever Going To See The Remakes Of Bawarchi, Amitabh Bachchan’s Mili And Koshish?

As the saying goes do not touch the classics. But in the past, we have seen filmmakers attempt their own retelling of a classic film from the 70s or 80s. While some like Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag (remake of Sholay) failed miserably, others like Rohit Shetty’s Bol Bachchan (remake of Golmaal) achieved some success.

Recently, it has been announced that Sameer Raj Sippy’s SRS Productions and Anushree Mehta and Abir Sengupta’s Jaadugar Films will be producing the official remakes of three Bollywood classics, Rajesh Khanna starrer Bawarchi, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan starrer Mili and Sanjeev Kumar’s Koshish. All three films are considered evergreen classics by Cinephiles and are celebrated among fans. While Koshish was directed by Gulzar, Mili, and Bawarchi are comedy classics helmed by the legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Arth And Anand Remakes Were Greenlit A While Ago

The question is, will we ever get to see these remakes getting the light of day? Last year, the remake of another Hrishikesh Mukherjee classic, Anand, was announced. It was supposed to be produced by Sameer Raj Sippy and Vikram Khakhar. But since then, there has been no development in the story.

Similarly, the remake plans of Mahesh Bhatt’s 1982 drama Arth have been doing the rounds, with no actual work being done. Right after the news came out, netizens took to social media to warn the makers to not touch the classics. Maybe it has something to do with copyright complications or the pressure of retelling a classic, but most of these projects generally don’t take off.

Bollywood’s Tryst With Classic Remakes

Once in a while, filmmakers try to re-tell classic stories in a modern setting. In most cases, barring the exceptions, the result falls flat on its face. Case in point is the 2013 film Zanjeer, starring Ram Charan and Priyanka Chopra. The film was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s 1973 film of the same name but failed both critically and commercially. A similar fate was of Ram Gopal Varma’s infamous film Aag.
