Vicky Kaushal is all set to appear as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Maddock’s historical drama Chhaava. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film stars him alongside Rashmika Mandanna. The cast is busy promoting the film across various cities ahead of its theatrical release.
Vicky Kaushal & Team Promote Chhaava In Delhi
At a recent event in Delhi’s Connaught Place, Kaushal was seen vibing to the beats of “Aaye Re Toofan” while it played in the background and fans cheered for him. The team also interacted with fans and media at the event.
Vicky spoke about his preparation for the role. He shared, “Chhaava is my first historical period film. For me, physicality was the most important thing.”
After Sam Bahadur, he went through a major transformation. He had to gain weight, grow a beard, and learn a new language. The director set three strict conditions—building a strong physique, mastering sword fighting, and perfecting horse riding. No visual effects were used for the action scenes, making months of training necessary. It took him six to seven months to prepare.

This is Vicky’s third time portraying a historical figure, following his roles in Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur. He admitted that playing Sambhaji Maharaj was particularly challenging.
“It’s an intense character. When you watch the film, you’ll understand why. It wasn’t easy stepping into his shoes,” he said.
The actor shared that the role had a lasting impact on him. While he usually moves on from characters after filming, Chhaava was different. He revealed, “Some scenes were so intense that I carried them home. After a 12-hour shoot, you just crash. There wasn’t much time left for my personal life.
Kaushal also spoke on the significance of Sambhaji Maharaj’s story. “People know about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but not many know about his son. His sacrifice played a crucial role in history, and it’s time the world sees that.”
What Rashmika Mandanna Said About Her Role
Mandanna (who plays Yesubai) said she was drawn to the project because of Utekar’s dedication. She shared, “When he narrated the story, I knew I had to do it. His passion is unmatched. Laxman sir told me to focus on the dialect. He said once I got that right, everything else would fall into place. So, I spent months perfecting it.”
The film also features Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty, and Ashutosh Rana. Chhaava is set to release in cinemas this Friday.
