Just weeks after securing interim relief to shield its film Dhurandhar from online leaks, Reliance’s media arm Jio Studios has abruptly stepped back from its anti piracy litigation, with the Madras High Court formally closing the matter without imposing any costs.
The suit, filed as a pre release protective move under the Copyright Act, 1957, had sought wide ranging directions to stop unauthorised circulation, streaming, and cable transmission of the film. But on February 18, the case took a sharp turn when Reliance informed the court it no longer wanted to pursue the proceedings.
Latest Update: Madras High Court Records Withdrawal And Closes All Applications
The commercial suit, titled Reliance Industries Limited vs BSNL, came up before Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy. During the hearing, counsel appearing for Reliance submitted that instructions had been received from the client to discontinue the case. Recording the submission, the court dismissed the suit as withdrawn, without costs, and closed the connected interim applications as well.
Notably, the order does not spell out why the company chose to pull the plug on a case that had already delivered interim protections. Advocate S. Deepak appeared for Reliance, instructed by PK Law Firm.
What Reliance Had Asked For In Its Anti Piracy Action
Reliance’s suit had named a long list of defendants across the distribution and internet ecosystem, including telecom service providers, internet intermediaries, and cable networks. The lineup included BSNL, MTNL, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Tata Communications, Sify Technologies, Hathway, GTPL Hathway, Asianet Satellite Communications, Spectra ISP Networks, along with several regional cable operators.
Among the key reliefs sought, Reliance wanted service providers and intermediaries to be directed to block access to websites found hosting infringing copies of Dhurandhar upon receiving notice. The company also sought prohibitory orders to restrain any cam recording, duplication, broadcast, distribution, or transmission of the film through cable television, DTH services, satellite systems, internet platforms, or storage devices.
Earlier, on December 5, the court had granted interim protection restraining service providers and cable operators from airing or enabling access to pirated versions of the film. The withdrawal now brings that litigation track to a close.
