Is Kantara Chapter 1 heading for the Rs. 700 crore milestone at the Indian box office? The Rishab Shetty starrer has shown remarkable staying power, collecting Rs. 679.50 crore in India after completing four weeks in cinemas. However, the film now faces an unexpected challenge that could impact its final collections.
The mythological drama grossed Rs. 40.25 crore in its fourth week, showing a superb hold by dropping just 53 percent from its holiday boosted third week. While there was a natural drop in business on weekdays, this is expected this far into the theatrical run, especially after an extended holiday period. The film collected Rs. 11 crore on its fourth Sunday alone, proving that audience interest remains strong.
How Close Is The 700 Crore Mark
Kantara Chapter 1 now stands less than Rs. 15 crore away from becoming the highest grossing film of the year in India. It is also about Rs. 20 crore short of the prestigious Rs. 700 crore mark. Under normal circumstances, the film would be expected to cruise past these milestones and close around Rs. 710 to 720 crore based on its current trajectory.
The film opened with a massive Rs. 384.50 crore in its first eight days. It then collected Rs. 169 crore in week two and Rs. 85.75 crore in week three. This consistent performance across all weeks showcases the strong word of mouth and audience appreciation for the film.
The Digital Release Challenge
The film hit a major roadblock on October 31 with an early digital release. While it is available on rental and not free streaming, this distinction hardly matters because it feeds piracy all the same. The impact of this move on the theatrical business remains to be seen, but it could potentially affect the final collections.
Many argue that films do not collect much after four weeks anyway, but this misses the bigger point. The real damage is not just what a film misses after digital release. It is about conditioning audiences to wait for digital release instead of going to theaters. When viewers know a film will be available digitally in just four weeks, they may choose to wait rather than spending money and time at cinemas.
Regional Breakdown Shows Karnataka Dominance
Karnataka remains the biggest market for Kantara Chapter 1, contributing Rs. 227.75 crore to the total. The rest of India has collectively added Rs. 230.25 crore, showing the film’s strong pan Indian appeal. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana together contributed Rs. 98.25 crore, while Tamil Nadu added Rs. 68 crore and Kerala brought in Rs. 55.25 crore.
The film is produced by Hombale Films, the banner behind blockbusters like the KGF franchise and Salaar.
