“It Is A Fictional Cop Drama”: Neeraj Pandey Issues Statement After Netflix’s Ghooskhor Pandat Triggers Controversy; Promotional Material Taken Down

The announcement of Ghooskhor Pandat at Netflix’s recent Next on Netflix showcase triggered immediate controversy online, with sections of viewers objecting to the title and interpreting it as offensive. The project, created by filmmaker Neeraj Pandey, quickly became the centre of a heated social media debate around intent, representation and naming.

In response to the backlash, Neeraj Pandey has now issued an official statement, addressing the concerns and confirming that all promotional material for the project has been taken down for the time being. The clarification comes days after the title began trending across platforms following the Netflix event.

Neeraj Pandey’s official statement

In his statement, Neeraj Pandey said:

“Our film is a fictional cop drama, and the term ‘Pandat’ is used simply as a colloquial name for a fictional character. The story focuses on an individual’s actions and choices and does not comment on or represent any caste, religion, or community. As a filmmaker, I approach my work with a deep sense of responsibility – to tell stories that are thoughtful and respectful. This film, like my earlier work, has been created with sincere intent and solely to entertain audiences.

We understand that the title of the film has caused hurt to some viewers, and we genuinely acknowledge those feelings. In light of these concerns, we have decided to take down all promotional materials for the time being, as we believe the film should be experienced in its entirety and understood in the context of the story we intended to tell, rather than judged on partial glimpses. We look forward to sharing the film with audiences soon.”

The statement makes it clear that Ghooskhor Pandat is a work of fiction and that the character name was not intended to reference or comment on any real community.

What led to the backlash

Ghooskhor Pandat was announced as part of Netflix’s upcoming Indian slate, but the title immediately drew criticism from Pandit community, who felt it carried targeted problematic connotations. The discussion escalated rapidly across social media, prompting calls for clarification from the makers soon after the announcement.

The controversy has also drawn attention from industry bodies. The Film Makers Combine reportedly issued a notice claiming that mandatory approval for the title had not been obtained. According to the organisation, Neeraj, a registered member of the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association, did not apply for formal permission to use the title, warning that continued use without authorisation could invite disciplinary action.

The dispute intensified further after Mumbai-based lawyer Ashutosh Dubey sent a legal notice to Netflix and the film’s producers. The notice described the title as defamatory, unconstitutional and socially provocative. He further argued that creative freedom does not extend to vilifying a community under the guise of fiction.

Neeraj Pandey’s response marks the first formal communication from the creative team since the controversy erupted. The decision to temporarily pull promotional assets signals a pause in the campaign while the concerns are acknowledged and addressed.

A cautious step amid content sensitivities

Netflix has increasingly found itself navigating heightened sensitivities around titles, themes and representation in India, where new content often faces intense public scrutiny. The move to take down promotional material reflects a cautious approach, with the makers emphasising that the film should be viewed as a complete narrative rather than judged through isolated promotional elements.

As of now, there has been no update regarding changes to the project’s title or its release timeline. The makers have reiterated their intent to present the story in full context when the time comes.

With Neeraj Pandey’s statement now in the public domain, Ghooskhor Pandat remains one of the most talked-about announcements from Netflix’s recent slate, as the conversation around creative intent and audience perception continues.
