Raj Kapoor Film Festival will celebrate his 100th birth anniversary by screening 10 of his iconic films across 40 cities from Dec13-15.

The Raj Kapoor Film Festival will celebrate the legendary filmmaker’s 100th birth anniversary with a special film retrospective. Organised by R.K. Films, Film Heritage Foundation, and NFDC-National Film Archive of India, the event will be held from December 13 to December 15, 2024.

It will be hosted across 40 cities and 135 cinemas in India, including PVR-Inox and Cinepolis theatres. During this time, audiences will have the rare opportunity to watch ten of Raj Kapoor’s iconic films on the big screen.

To make the festival accessible to everyone, tickets will be priced at just Rs 100 at participating cinemas. This affordable pricing is an effort to reach out to the masses, as his films often focus on the lives of everyday people. 

Raj Kapoor’s storytelling deeply resonated with post-Partition India, and he became the most beloved actor-filmmaker in the country.

The festival will showcase ten of Raj Kapoor’s most iconic films, including:

  • Barsaat (1949)
  • Awaara (1951)
  • Shree 420 (1955)
  • Jagte Raho (1956)
  • Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960)
  • Sangam (1964)
  • Mera Naam Joker (1970)
  • Bobby (1973)
  • Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985)

Fans and movie lovers are invited to relive the magic of Raj Kapoor’s cinematic legacy from December 13 to 15, 2024, at theatres across India.

Raj Kapoor’s Film Journey

Raj Kapoor, who lived from 1924 to 1988, is remembered as “The Greatest Showman” of Indian cinema. A filmmaker, producer, and actor, he started his career as a child actor in Inquilab (1935) before founding the R.K. Films studio in 1948. 

Kapoor’s films explored themes such as the dreams of the common man, rural-urban tensions, and modern life challenges. His most famous works include Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Sangam (1964), and Mera Naam Joker (1970), which continue to be cherished by audiences.

Kapoor’s films gained recognition internationally, particularly in the Soviet Union, where his tramp character, inspired by Charlie Chaplin, was hugely popular.

He received numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1988. Films like Awaara and Boot Polish were even showcased at the Cannes Film Festival, while Jagte Raho won the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
