Red Chillies Entertainment Hits Back At Sameer Wankhede’s Defamation Case: Calls Netflix Series ‘The Bads Of Bollywood’ A Satire

Has a Netflix series landed in legal trouble for its satirical take on Bollywood? Red Chillies Entertainment has officially responded to the defamation lawsuit filed by former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede. The case revolves around the Netflix show The Ba****ds of Bollywood, which Wankhede claims portrayed a character resembling him in both appearance and behavior.

The production house has strongly defended the series in its official reply to the court. Red Chillies Entertainment maintained that The Bastards of Bollywood is a Bollywood satire where all characters are depicted with deliberately exaggerated traits to heighten the humor. The makers have called the complaint an attempt to curtail artistic and creative freedom.

The Defense Strategy

In its detailed response, Red Chillies Entertainment described Wankhede’s stance as an instance of hypersensitivity. The production house pointed out a crucial fact that changes the entire perspective of the case. According to the filing, Sameer Wankhede‘s image had already been subjected to widespread public scrutiny long before the show’s release.

The former officer’s involvement in the 2021 drugs case involving Aryan Khan had drawn considerable criticism and ridicule at the time. News coverage, social media discussions, and public commentary had already affected his reputation. Red Chillies stated that these materials clearly demonstrated that his reputation had been impacted earlier, and the lawsuit appears to be an attempt to silence satirical portrayals that fall under creative expression.

What The Makers Are Asking For

Represented by senior advocates Neeraj Kishan Kaul and Shyel Trehan, Red Chillies Entertainment has requested the court to allow the show to remain intact. The production company argued that removing the contested scene would disrupt the series’ narrative flow. They emphasized that such editing would harm the artistic integrity of the show.

The makers also clarified an important detail. The show does not directly name or reference Sameer Wankhede anywhere. The police officer character in question is merely depicted as an overzealous cop, which is a common trope used in dark comedies and satires across the world. This type of character representation falls well within the boundaries of creative freedom.

The Legal Battle Continues

The case came up before Justice Purushindra Kumar on Thursday and has now been adjourned to November 10 for further proceedings. Both sides will present additional arguments on that date. The outcome of this case could have important implications for creative freedom in Indian entertainment content.

About The Bads Of Bollywood

The Bastards of Bollywood is a Netflix series that offers sharp commentary on celebrity culture, media frenzy, and moral ambiguity within the film industry. The show has drawn attention for its unapologetically bold take on Bollywood. This legal case has sparked debate about where the line between satire and defamation should be drawn in Indian entertainment.
