Remembering The King Of Romance: The Stories Behind Yash Chopra’s Iconic Bond With SRK, Big B, And Rishi Kapoor

Today, on his birth anniversary, we remember the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, famously known as the “King of Romance.” While his films gave us timeless love stories, his legacy also includes building the careers of superstars. He was more than just a director to his actors; he was a mentor and a friend who shared a unique and personal bond with them.

Yash Chopra didn’t just create iconic characters; he shaped the on-screen personas of some of the industry’s biggest names. On this special day, we look back at his unforgettable collaborations and relationships with three iconic actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and Shah Rukh Khan.

The Man Who Rescued Amitabh Bachchan Twice

Yash Chopra played a pivotal role in Amitabh Bachchan’s career not once, but twice. In the 1970s, when Big B was delivering a series of flops, it was Chopra’s directorial Deewaar (1975) that resurrected his career and gave him the iconic “Angry Young Man” title. Later, Chopra also showcased his softer, romantic side in classics like Kabhi Kabhie and Silsila. Decades later, when Bachchan’s career hit another rough patch, Yash Chopra offered him the powerful role of the headmaster in Mohabbatein. So grateful was Big B for this opportunity that he did the film for a token fee of just Re 1.

Convincing A Reluctant Rishi Kapoor

Rishi Kapoor was known for his boyish charm, but also for his stubbornness. He almost missed out on a career-defining role in Yash Chopra’s multi-starrer Kabhi Kabhie. In his biography, Rishi Kapoor admitted that he was initially hesitant to do the film because he felt his co-star and then-girlfriend Neetu Kapoor had a better role. He even childishly told Yash Chopra to give him Neetu’s part. However, Yash Chopra, along with Shashi Kapoor, patiently sat him down and explained the importance of his character. Rishi later said he was “stupid and silly” to have almost rejected a film that became a romantic masterpiece.

An Emotional Last Shot With Shah Rukh Khan

The bond between Yash Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan was like that of a father and son. If SRK is the “King of Romance,” it’s because Yash Chopra guided him. It was Chopra who convinced SRK to embrace romantic roles that made him a global superstar. Their last film together, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, was also Yash Chopra’s final directorial. SRK recalled an emotional moment from the set where, after the final shot, Yash Chopra began to cry, saying, “Picture khatam.” He grew emotional realizing it could be their last shot together, a poignant memory that SRK holds close to his heart.
