“Rahul Wasn’t Just Obsessed, He Was Madly In Love”—Darr Writer Honey Irani Reveals SRK’s Complex Character Had A Genuine Emotional Core

Shah Rukh Khan’s Cult Classic ‘Darr’ Re-Released In Theatres—Writer Honey Irani Reflects On Rahul’s ‘Terrifyingly Tender’ Love For Kiran

Not Obsession, But Love—Honey Irani Weighs-in on Rahul’s Intentions

While Yash Raj Films’ Darr (1993) has been celebrated for Shah Rukh Khan’s frantic depiction of infatuated lover Rahul, it is interesting to understand how one of Bollywood’s scariest anti-heroes might also have included an emotional roadmap behind the prompts of his stammer and insanity. Darr was re-released in the cinemas on April 4, 2025. Writer Honey Irani speaks of the birth of Darr‘s Rahul and how love—not lust—was responsible for making his character unforgettable.

Irani recently revealed in an interview another layer to Rahul’s psychological psyche:

“We were very conscious of the line we were drawing. Rahul could not just be someone who wanted Kiran—he had to be absolutely, obsessively in love. There was no crossing-the-line behaviour.”

Irani has said the decision was intentional and a topic of conversation with Yash Chopra during their writing process.

“He was not the kind of man who was going to impose on anyone. Even when he whispered, ‘K-K-Kiran,’ he had fear. That stutter was not just meant to be amusing—it represented his emotional fracture,”

Irani explained, adding as much dimension to a character that was seen as a pop-culture villain.

Aamir Khan Was The First Choice Before SRK Took Over

Interestingly, Irani disclosed that Aamir Khan was the first in line for the role of Rahul.

“We narrated to Aamir first. But something happened between him and Yash ji and he opted out. Sunny Deol agreed to play the hero, but we needed Rahul. Then Shah Rukh Khan came in and heard it and then immediately said yes,”

She continued.

That “yes” was not only historic for the film but also for the evolution of SRK himself. Darr helped establish SRK and the myth of the “nice guy” hero, straddling the line between hero-villain duality that he would also exploit in the films Baazigar and Anjaam.

With Darr’s recent return to the theatres in 2025, and with it, Rahul, Kiran, and Sunil (Sunny Deol) back in action, nostalgia and recognition have spread across generations. Fans are not just recalling the classic “I love you, k-k-kiran” moment but also analysing the psychological layers that Shah Rukh brought to the screen. With Honey Irani’s latest statements, Darr can now pose as not just a romantic thriller but a case study in emotional trauma disguised as love.
