Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Faces CBFC Roadblock Ahead of June 20 Release
Aamir Khan‘s highly anticipated emotional drama Sitaare Zameen Par is just days away from its June 20 release but is stuck in a last-minute dilemma with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). According to industry sources, the board suggested two cuts to the film — which Aamir, who is also the film’s producer, is refusing to accept.
Directed by R. S. Prasanna and co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film has already generated industry buzz for its strong messaging and for Aamir’s choice to forgo OTT deals, aiming for a traditional theatrical release.
CBFC vs Aamir Khan: What’s the Issue?
According to an industry insider, the CBFC’s Examining Committee has suggested two minor cuts, but the specific context of these cuts remains unclear.
However, Aamir is reportedly unwilling to comply, stating that both scenes are significant and justified.
“Aamir and Prasanna made a beautifully thoughtful film,” the insider said. “He believes that these cuts take away from the impact of the story.”
As the cuts have not been accepted, the CBFC has withheld the censor certificate, thereby delaying release logistics.
Aamir is now expected to meet with CBFC officials again on June 16, hoping to resolve the matter and secure the certification in time to begin advance bookings.
Passed in the UK, But Not Yet Cleared in India
Interestingly, Sitaare Zameen Par has already been cleared by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) in the UK with a 12A rating, citing “discrimination and moderate gender references”. The runtime is 2 hours and 35 minutes, per the BBFC website.
This contrast highlights the ongoing tension between creative freedom and certification standards in India versus international boards.
Strategic Shift: From Slow Rollout to Wide Release
Originally, the film was intended for a gradual word-of-mouth release. However, strong exhibitor demand has led to a revised plan — with reports indicating a wide release on 3,000 to 3,500 screens across India.
This new plan makes timely certification all the more critical for distributors and exhibitors alike.
