Mahesh Bhatt, a renowned Indian filmmaker, has been known for his hard-hitting and realistic films that have received critical acclaim. In the 90s, he directed films like Sadak, Sir, and Criminal, which established him as a master of the genre. However, in 1998, he changed course and directed a masala comedy film called Duplicate, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla, and Sonali Bendre. In an old interview, Bhatt revealed that he did it to impress his young daughter, Alia Bhatt.
During the making of the film, a news crew visited the sets to chat with the cast and crew. Mahesh Bhatt spoke to the crew about his reason for switching genres, stating, “It’s a film that I am looking forward to showing my children.” He implied that his earlier films may have been too violent or dark for kids and that he was hoping to impress Alia, who was just four years old at the time. “Children normally don’t get impressed by their parents. The chances are that I might just impress my four-year-old girl Alia by Duplicate,” he said.

Alia eventually made an appearance in one of Mahesh Bhatt’s films as a child, playing the younger version of Preity Zinta’s character in Sangharsh in 1999, which was produced by Mahesh Bhatt. In 2012, she made her Bollywood debut with Student of the Year and has since established herself as one of the leading actresses of her age.
Sadak 2, released in 2020, marked Alia’s first film directed by her father Mahesh Bhatt. It was a sequel to Mahesh’s 1991 hit starring Sanjay Dutt and Mahesh’s older daughter Pooja.
