Filmmaker Karan Johar has spoken in detail for the first time about the massive new partnership at his company, Dharma Productions. In a recent interview, he opened up about selling a 50% stake to billionaire Adar Poonawalla and how it has changed the way he will make films in the future.
Last year, Karan Johar signed a huge deal, reportedly worth ₹1000 crore, with Adar Poonawalla’s company. While the partnership is set to fuel massive growth, it has also brought a new level of financial discipline to the production house.
‘I Had Many Dreams That Weren’t Fulfilled’
Speaking candidly, Karan Johar explained that the decision to sell half his company was driven purely by the desire to grow. “I had many dreams that weren’t able to get fulfilled because there was a funding issue. I was very clear that I am okay to sell 50% of my company… only because I want to expand,” he said. He clarified that Dharma was already a profitable, zero-debt company, but this deal with his close friend Adar Poonawalla was a strategic step to achieve bigger goals, like opening new distribution and music arms.
The New Reality: Focus On Profitability
The biggest change, Karan admitted, is the new focus on accountability and profitability. “There was never accountability before this, I just learned the term quarter,” he joked. He revealed that his CEO, Apoorva Mehta, now keeps him on his toes, often advising, “Not profitable, don’t do it.” This marks a significant shift for the filmmaker, who previously made some films for creative satisfaction, even if they weren’t huge box office hits. With a new partner on board, every decision must now be weighed against its commercial potential.
Will Films Like Homebound Be Made Again?
This new business-first approach has left Karan with a tough choice. He used his critically acclaimed film Homebound as an example of a project he was proud of, but which might not fit the new model. “I made Homebound, worldwide critically acclaimed, but I can’t say if I’ll take such decisions in the future or not,” he confessed. He admitted that he would feel “upset” about this but understands that growth comes from profit. “I will always be artistic, but it is important to be commercial as well,” he concluded.
