A verdict in the Jiah Khan suicide case has been reserved by a special CBI court in Mumbai. Nearly a decade ago, on June 3, 2013, Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan found her daughter hanging from the ceiling of their home in Juhu, Mumbai.
Following the discovery of a 6-page letter purportedly written by Jiah, which indicated a tumultuous relationship, the Juhu Police detained Suraj Pancholi, Jiah Khan’s then-boyfriend, on charges of aiding her suicide. The suicide note was presented as evidence against Suraj.
Jiah’s mother, Rabia Khan, had made a claim that her daughter had been murdered and had approached the Bombay High Court, alleging that the local police had not conducted a thorough investigation into her unfortunate death.
The HC transferred the Juhu police case to the CBI on July 3, 2014. The agency also arrived at the conclusion that it was a case of suicide. According to the CBI’s findings, Jiah’s suicide note detailed her experiences of a troubled relationship, physical abuse, and alleged mental and physical torture by Suraj Pancholi, which led to her decision to take her own life.
During the trial, the prosecution called upon 22 witnesses, including Jiah’s mother, who testified that it was a case of murder and confirmed that Pancholi had physically and verbally abused Jiah. In court, Rabia testified that neither the police nor the CBI had collected any “admissible evidence” to prove that her daughter had committed suicide.
“We concluded the final arguments today (Thursday) on facts as well as on merits in the matter of Sooraj Pancholi versus CBI. “We relied upon certain landmark judgments of the honourable Supreme Court as well as high court to point out as to how the current case does not fall under the category of abetment to suicide. Now the matter is listed for passing of final judgment (on April 28),” PTI cited Prashant Patil, who was appearing for Suraj, as saying.
