Maidaan Movie Review: Ajay Devgn’s Exceptional Performance Elevates The Film, Despite Its Predictable Plot And Familiar Treatment

Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn and directed by Amit Sharma, is a biopic that immortalizes the unsung hero of Indian football, Syed Abdul Rahim. The film delves into Rahim’s life as a pioneering football coach and manager.

Maidaan: Plot

Set during the Golden Era of Indian football (the 1950s and 60s), Maidaan follows the journey of the Indian football team. Legends like Chuni Goswami, P. K. Banerjee, and Jarnail Singh brought home gold medals at the Asian Games and finished fourth at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. However, the film pays homage to Rahim, who believed in India’s potential as a football giant. His battle against politics within the football federation and influential sports journalists adds depth to the narrative.

Maidaan: Performance

Ajay Devgn shines as Rahim, portraying the coach’s quiet yet dignified demeanor. Priyamani, as Rahim’s wife Saira, delivers an impressive performance creating magic on screen. Her broken english adds much needed fun.

The film also stars Gajraj Rao as a journalist who delivers an applause worthy performance. The film also features several fresh faces, including Chaitnya Sharma aka SlowCheeta, Madhur Mittal of the Slumdog Millionaire fame and more.l

Maidaan: Analysis

Director Amit Ravindernath Sharma skillfully captures the era, football team dynamics, and Rahim’s personal challenges.

The film’s soundtrack and background score by A. R. Rahman add excitement. However, the songs didn’t resonate as much one hopes for.

Nevertheless, Maidaan stands out as a refreshing departure from the usual loud, patriotic movies, maintaining the spirit of nationalism through well-crafted dialogues, thanks to writers Ritesh Shah and Siddhant Mago.

In terms of cinematography, Tushar Kanti Ray and Fyodor Lyass (sports) skillfully use CGI and VFX to bring the sport to life. However, some shots in the second half evoke memories of the film ‘Chak De! India’.

Few sequences do elevate the proceedings: India Vs Australia press conference, flight to Jakarta, pre interval sequence and The recreation of the final match.

Maidaan: Verdict

Maidaan not only captures the spirit of sportsmanship but also delves into the human struggle, determination, and the power of collective effort. Ajay Devgn’s portrayal of the coach is both inspiring and heartfelt. The film’s narrative seamlessly weaves together moments of triumph and vulnerability,  bringing back memories and emotions of Chak De! India.

Despite its merit, film will find few takers specially outside high end multiplexes.
