Advance Booking Report Of Rajkummar Rao Starrer Maalik: Film Struggles With Under 6500 Tickets In National Chains, Set For Poor Under Day One

Rajkummar Rao has grown a strong reputation for championing content-driven cinema, from Newton to Stree. His upcoming action-thriller Maalik, directed by Pulkit, marks a rare mainstream commercial action film for the actor.

The film boasts a decent ensemble, including Manushi Chhillar and Prosenjit Chatterjee, and releases on July 11, 2025. Despite a high-profile release window, the movie faces stiff competition from other July releases, creating a challenging environment.

Maalik Fails To Cross Even 5000 Tickets In National Chains In 24 Hours

Advance booking for the film started yesterday and as expected, there is no pre release buzz for the film. It has sold close to 1500 tickets in Cinepolis and 5000 tickets in Pvr & Inox combined for day one.

With under 6500 tickets in national chains, it paints really sorry picture for the film. It will struggle to cross 4.5 crore net on day one which is a poor figure.

Factors Affecting Box Office Performance

Early buzz around the teaser and promo content had been strong, particularly praising Rajkummar Rao’s stylized action avatar and intense screen presence. However, that momentum appears to have tapered. One analyst notes that the film’s buzz has “slowed,” citing strong competition from other July premieres and the absence of a major star supporting Rao in a more marketable role  .

Additionally, the brutal release calendar in July means that exhibitors may prefer to allocate more screens to bigger commercial releases. The race for mid-July shelf space may squeeze Maalik’s show count and revenue potential  .

Upcoming films in July are entering a “ruthless box office race,” where even strong performers struggle for visibility amid a 7–10 day window before new releases overwhelm the market. This scenario does not favour Maalik, which lacks the star power of franchise films or major blockbusters.

100% Flop Record Of Manushi Chillar

Manushi Chillar made debut with big budget film Samrat Prithviraj with Akshay Kumar tanked at box office. Her following releases The Great Indian Familyopposite Vicky Kaushal was a disaster and then massive film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan flopped at box office too. Even her south debit Operation Valentine was a big flop.

OTT Director Making Theatrical Debut

Pulkit directed mildly appreciated ott films like Maroon and Bhakshak. His directorial Kartavya with Saif Ali Khan rotting in canes for years. Now he is making big screen debut with Maalik and it seems doubtful. Last week another ott hyped director Vishal Furia delivered a flop Maa

Although Maalik promises gritty action and Rajkummar’s strongest commercial outing yet, its niche appeal and the crowded release calendar pose risks. If early audience reactions aren’t overwhelmingly positive, the film may struggle to sustain or improve its opening day figures.

At this juncture, analysts expect Maalik to open in the ₹ 3.75 crore range—a modest start by Rao’s standards. The film’s performance will heavily depend on urban multiplexer turnout and immediate word-of-mouth in its first 24 hours. In such a competitive July, Maalik will need strong early traction to escape the mid-week churn.
