In a year filled with high expectations and heavyweight releases, Jio Studios’ 2025 slate has delivered a mixed bag of fortunes. After several anticipated films struggled to find an audience, one title emerged as a box office savior for the studio and re-energised Bollywood’s end-of-year landscape.
Moderate Hit Sky Force
The Hindi film calendar of 2025 began with solid promise for Jio Studios, which had backed a diverse lineup ranging from action spectacles to horror thrillers. Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force, released around Republic Day, offered a patriotic war drama with a strong cast. Despite the buzz and positive reviews, its performance was described as average, with the film entering the Rs 100 crore club but not becoming a big hit.
Disastrous Maa
Kajol’s horror thriller Maa hit screens on June 27 and was anticipated as one of the more intriguing genre experiments of the year. Directed by Vishal Furia and linked to the expanding Shaitaan universe, the film opened poorly and though maintained steady traction in its first week. By its tenth day, Maa had already garnered over Rs 24 crore at the Indian box office, illustrating poor audience interest.
Washout Son Of Sardaar 2
None of Jio’s big releases this year hit the mark. Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar 2, a long-awaited sequel to the 2012 hit, failed to replicate the original’s charm with audiences. Despite a notable star cast and franchise pedigree, early box office numbers showed a steep drop after opening, with collections struggling to grow beyond modest figures of 30 crore lifetime.
Mega Disaster Baby John
Similarly, Varun Dhawan’s Baby John, which hit screens late in 2024 and carried expectations heading into 2025, ended its theatrical run with disappointing receipts under Rs 40 crore, making it one of the year’s underperformers.
Dhurandhar Saved The Day
Amid these ups and downs, Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh, delivered a remarkable turnaround for Jio Studios. Released in December, this spy action thriller took audiences by storm and carved out a position among the top commercial successes of the year. In just its first week, the film amassed over Rs 239 crore in India, surpassing heavyweight releases such as War 2 and solidifying its place as one of 2025’s biggest hits.
The movie’s appeal was not confined to India. Dhurandhar also crossed the USD 2 million mark in the North American market within its first three days, highlighting strong overseas interest and broadening its box office impact.
For Jio Studios, Dhurandhar may well be the defining victory of 2025. After a series of mixed results—including average runs like Sky Force and underwhelming outings like Son Of Sardaar 2 and Baby John—the Ranveer Singh starrer has reinforced the studio’s commercial clout and provided a crucial boost to its yearly box office tally.
