James Cameron’s Avatar Fire And Ash continues its impressive run at the Indian box office. The third installment in the Avatar franchise has completed ten days in theaters and has already secured a place among the top Hollywood grossers in the country. Despite facing a drop from its opening weekend, the film is maintaining steady collections and is poised to climb higher in the all time rankings.
The film’s performance during its second weekend shows that it still has strong appeal among Indian audiences, though it is trailing behind its predecessor Avatar: The Way of Water by a significant margin.
Second Weekend Collections Show 55 Percent Drop
Avatar Fire And Ash grossed Rs 34.75 crore during its second weekend in India. This represents a 55 percent drop from its opening weekend. While this might seem steep, it is broadly in line with the trend of its predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water. The drop is considered acceptable given the pattern established by the previous film.
However, the concern is that it opened at a significantly lower level to begin with. After ten days in release, the film is trailing Avatar 2 by 45 percent, which is one of the biggest drop offs among major markets across the world for the film.
Total Collections Cross Rs 164 Crore
The film’s total gross stands at Rs 164.50 crore (Rs 135 crore nett) after ten days. This translates to approximately USD 18.25 million. The film is already amongst the top Hollywood grossers in the country, currently sitting at seventh position.
It will soon move up one place to sixth by overtaking The Lion King. However, that is likely to be the ceiling, as The Jungle Book at fifth place appears out of reach with the current trajectory.
Tamil Nadu Performs Best, Kerala Shows Steepest Decline
The film has performed best in Tamil Nadu, which has consistently been the case for Hollywood releases on Christmas in the last couple of years. This pattern was seen with Mufasa last year, Spider Man: No Way Home in 2021, and The Way of Water in 2022.
The neighbouring Kerala is showing the steepest decline compared to Avatar 2, with the threequel set to finish around 70 percent lower. Interestingly, Hindi circuits have held relatively better than South compared to Avatar 2, indicating that competition from other releases is not the primary factor.
Expected To Cross Rs 200 Crore Mark
Avatar Fire And Ash still has another week of holidays ahead, during which it will continue to collect well. There isn’t much competition in Hindi in January, although South will see plenty during Pongal and Sankranti. The film can sustain at low levels, which Hollywood films generally do.
Industry experts believe it will certainly cross the Rs 200 crore gross mark. However, reaching Rs 250 crore seems to be difficult given the current trends. Avatar: The Way of Water remains the highest grossing Hollywood film in India with Rs 465 crore gross.
