A franchise follow-up was expected to bring at least some opening weekend muscle, but Pati Patni Aur Woh Do has begun its run with a clear stumble. The Ayushmann Khurrana-led romantic comedy collected Rs 20.11 crore nett in its first three days in India, a total that places it well over 50 per cent below the first installment’s opening weekend and marks one of the softer starts for a film in this once-reliable comedy space.
A Weekend Far Below Franchise Expectations
The film collected Rs 4.38 crore on day one, followed by Rs 6.67 crore on Saturday and Rs 9.06 crore on Sunday, ending its first weekend at Rs 20.11 crore nett. Sunday did register a 30 per cent jump over the previous day, but the overall total remained underwhelming for a sequel carrying recall value and a cast fronted by a proven theatrical name.
The first Pati Patni Aur Woh, released seven years ago, had opened much stronger with Rs 9.10 crore on day one and Rs 35.94 crore nett over its first weekend. That makes the sequel’s debut more than 50 per cent lower than the original, a significant drop for a title that arrived with built-in familiarity and a genre template that once connected strongly with the audience.

Why The Franchise Comparison Stings
The sharper disappointment comes from what the earlier film represented at the box office. The first Pati Patni Aur Woh belonged to a period when relationship comedies and small-town entertainers were drawing solid theatrical crowds. A sequel entering the same space would ordinarily be expected to at least leverage nostalgia, franchise memory and the lead actor’s established appeal.
Instead, the numbers suggest that brand value alone has not been enough this time. The gap between the two films’ opening weekends highlights not just a sequel underperforming, but a format struggling to recreate its earlier theatrical pull.
The Film’s Cast, Genre And Franchise Positioning
Directed by Mudassar Aziz, Pati Patni Aur Woh Do stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Wamiqa Gabbi, Rakulpreet Singh and Sara Ali Khan. The film is mounted as a romantic comedy drama and follows the familiar Hindi theatrical template of relationship humour, interpersonal confusion and mainstream ensemble casting.
That positioning would have looked far more secure in the pre-pandemic marketplace. In today’s environment, however, audience turnout for mid-budget comedies has become far more selective, especially when strong word of mouth does not arrive immediately.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Ayushmann Khurrana was once at the forefront of the small-town comedy wave that consistently delivered both acclaim and box office success. His screen persona, built around rooted humour and relatable conflicts, turned him into one of the most dependable stars in that lane during the late 2010s.
Pati Patni Aur Woh Do now lands in a very different theatrical climate, where familiar genres no longer guarantee a healthy start. The film’s opening weekend underlines how much the market has changed, and how even actors strongly associated with this space are being forced to navigate a far less forgiving box office landscape.
