Bollywood came out of very difficult year 2022 where only ‘Bhool Bhullaiya 2’, ‘Drishyam 2’ and ‘Brahmastra’ worked and rest of the films tanked without trace. 2023 is crucial year as lot of big films set to release this year. Success of this year will decide way forward for industry.

Pathaan: Global Historic All Time Blockbuster
This year only one film made noise and broke all possible records worldwide. Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer YRF’s ‘Pathaan’ was global blockbuster with more than 1050 crore worldwide gross, 525 cr Hindi nett and records in almost every territory. Film crossed 3.30 cr footfalls too which is achievement specially in post pandemic era. Film has re established SRK as King of box office. These numbers will prove very tough to break in times to come.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar: Above Average
There was lot of speculation and usual online banter over budget of TJMM but truth is that Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer managed to stay afloat in cinemas for weeks and despite not so great start, it is set to finish with 145-147 cr nett domestic nett lifetime and 215 cr worldwide gross. It’s a fair number considering genre as rom com has not done well in ages. Though it can not be termed as hit at box office but it will recover it cost from ancillary rights.

Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway: Above Average
This was probably surprise of the year as far as medium – small budget films are concerned. Rani Mukerji’s stardom and absence from any medium compelled audience to watch her in cinemas. Film opened to average numbers but then trended well over next few weeks to cross lifetime of 22 cr nett domestic. With worldwide business close to 40 cr gross, this proved to an above average one at box office. Though it ended with less numbers than similar trended films of 2022, ‘Uunchai’ and ‘Rocketry’ but to be fair those both were costlier films.

Bholaa: Flop
Ajay Devgn starrer ‘Bholaa’ was his ambitious project and he wore director’s cap fourth time. Success eluded Ajay once again as director. Remake of Tamil film ‘Kaithi’, ‘Bholaa’ neither opened well nor jumped big despite numerous holidays in first and second week. Film is heading for 86-88 cr nett lifetime India which is way below par.

Shehzada And Selfiee: Disasters
There were two shockers this year as both of these films failed to take off. Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon starrer was remake of hit Allu Arjun film but film bombed badly at box office with less than 30 cr nett lifetime collections. Dharma Production’s ‘Selfiee’ starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi was also remake of hit Malyalam film ‘Driving License’ but film proved to be massive disasters with less than 17 cr nett lifetime.
Kuttey, Bheed And Zwigato : Washout
There are disasters and then there are washouts. ‘Bheed’ had prolific cast and so did ‘Kuttey’. Big both were wannabe art house cinema but half baked. Neither these were pure art film nor an entertainer. Both films tanked miserably. Kapil Sharma starrer ‘Zwigato’ was never a theatrical film and so it’s no surprise that it tanked badly.
Then there were few third grade films like ‘Shiv Shastri Balboa’, ‘Gandhi Godse – Ek Yudh’ and many more which were released for reasons known best to film makers.
2023: 1st Quarter Verdict Of Bollywood Films In Nutshell:
Pathaan : All Time Blockbuster
Shehzada : Disaster
Selfiee : Disaster
Tu Jhoothi Mai Makkaar : Above Average
Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway : Above Average
Bholaa : Flop
Kuttey : Washout
Bheed: Washout
Zwigato: Washout
What Is In Store In Second Quarter For Bollywood
Second quarter is weirdly laid out, there is only one major release in April which is Salman Khan starrer ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ on 21st April. Then there is no major release for 40 days until Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Jawan’ which is schedule for 2nd June release. Though there is still uncertainty around release of ‘Jawan’ but makers have not made any announcement yet on that regard. Trade is praying Shah Rukh Khan to come back with another blockbuster. Then there is Prabhas’s magnum opus ‘Adipurush’ followed by Ajay Devgn’s ‘Maidaan’ and then quarter ends with Kartik and Kiara starrer ‘Satyaprem Ki Katha’.
Industry needs at least 3 hits from here onwards out of these 5 big releases otherwise exhibition sector is in bad shape. IPL will also affect the films to an extent but good content will triumph against all odds as SRK’s ‘Pathaan’ proved big time.
