Rajinikanth has kicked off Jailer 2 with the kind of opening that instantly turns a release into an event. The sequel grossed Rs 124 crore worldwide on day one, drawing Rs 67 crore from India and Rs 57 crore from overseas, and handing Tamil cinema one of its biggest opening-day totals in recent years.
International markets played a decisive role in that haul. Jailer 2 closed its first day at USD 6 million overseas, giving the film a formidable global base right out of the gate and reinforcing Rajinikanth’s pull well beyond the domestic market.
Overseas Numbers Boost The Opening
The United States emerged as one of the film’s biggest contributors with USD 1.725 million, while the Middle East delivered USD 1.85 million. Canada added USD 325,000, Australia and New Zealand contributed USD 300,000, Malaysia brought in USD 500,000, Singapore collected USD 200,000, and the United Kingdom finished at USD 500,000.
The rest of Europe added USD 450,000, with other remaining territories taking the total overseas gross to USD 6 million. The market spread underlines how widely the sequel connected on its opening day, with business coming in from nearly every major Tamil cinema territory abroad.
Bigger Start Than The First Jailer Overseas
The overseas start also puts Jailer 2 ahead of the first Jailer at the same stage. The 2023 film had opened to USD 4.70 million internationally on day one, before going on to collect USD 15 million over its opening weekend and closing with USD 23 million overseas.
That makes the sequel’s USD 6 million first day a clear jump over the original film’s opening abroad. The comparison is especially significant because Jailer went on to become a major theatrical success, and Jailer 2 has begun its run from an even higher day-one base internationally.
Cast And Crew
Jailer 2 is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and stars Rajinikanth in the lead. The film is produced by Sun Pictures, with Anirudh Ravichander composing the music. It is an action comedy crime entertainer and serves as the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster Jailer.
The story returns to the world of Muthuvel Pandian, Rajinikanth’s character from the first film, expanding a franchise that has now proven its box office strength both in India and overseas.
What This Opening Means
More than just a strong first-day figure, the opening confirms that Jailer has grown into a reliable theatrical franchise. For Rajinikanth, it adds another commanding start to a late-career phase that has continued to generate event cinema at scale. For Tamil cinema, it is another reminder that a star-led commercial sequel can still open like a major global spectacle when the recall is this strong.
