Main Vaapas Aaunga Box Office: Imtiaz Ali Records His Lowest Opening As Diljit Dosanjh Film Starts At Rs 1.15 Crore

Imtiaz Ali’s return to cinemas has begun on a quieter note than expected. Main Vaapas Aaunga, the filmmaker’s first theatrical release after a six-year gap, opened in theatres on June 12, 2026, but its first-day box office numbers placed it at the lowest start of his directorial career so far. For a film carrying Ali’s signature emotional sweep and a cast led by Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina, the opening has sparked immediate trade attention.

The film arrived with strong critical appreciation, especially for its Partition-era emotional canvas, but that goodwill did not immediately translate into footfalls on opening day.

Main Vaapas Aaunga Opens At Rs 1.15 Crore On Day 1

Main Vaapas Aaunga collected Rs 1.15 crore net in India on its first day, while its gross earnings stood at Rs 1.38 crore, according to Sacnilk figures cited in the trade. The film played across 2,302 shows on Friday and registered an overall occupancy of 12.22 percent.

The day began slowly with 5.92 percent occupancy in morning shows. The film gained some traction later, moving to 10.77 percent in the afternoon and 10.85 percent in the evening, before touching 18.23 percent during night shows. Delhi NCR led the show count with 308 screenings and an overall occupancy of 13 percent, while Mumbai recorded 235 shows with 11 percent occupancy.

The number is significantly below Ali’s earlier theatrical openings. Love Aaj Kal, starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, had opened at around Rs 12.4 crore. Jab Harry Met Sejal, led by Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma, opened at Rs 15.25 crore. The new film also trailed Tamasha at Rs 10.95 crore, Rockstar at Rs 10.6 crore and Highway at Rs 3.4 crore.

How The Film Compares With Recent Releases

The muted start also stands out when compared with the recent theatrical outings of its lead cast. Diljit Dosanjh’s previous theatrical release Border 2 opened at Rs 30 crore, while Sharvari’s Vedaa had started at Rs 6.3 crore. Vedang Raina’s Jigra had collected Rs 4.55 crore on its first day.

Among recent romance-driven releases, Main Vaapas Aaunga opened below Chand Mera Dil, which collected Rs 3 crore, and Do Deewane Seher Mein, which earned Rs 1.25 crore. It matched Ek Din, which also opened at Rs 1.15 crore.

What Main Vaapas Aaunga Is About

Main Vaapas Aaunga is directed by Imtiaz Ali and stars Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina in key roles. The 2026 theatrical release is positioned as a Partition romance, exploring love, memory and displacement against one of the most painful chapters in the subcontinent’s history.

The film faces competition this week from Governor and Bharat Bhagya Vidhata. Its weekend trend will now determine how much ground it can recover after a modest opening day.
