Rajinikanth’s latest film Jailer saw a tremendous start on its opening day, with initial estimates indicating it earned around Rs. 48 crores at the Indian box office. These figures make it the Tamil film with the highest first-day earnings in 2023, surpassing the earlier record set by Varisu (Rs. 29.80 crores) in January. Overall, Jailer secures the fourth spot in the all-time highest opening day earnings for Tamil cinema, trailing just behind 2.0, Beast, and Sarkar. Depending on the final figures, it even has the potential to climb to the third spot, as Sarkar holds only a slightly higher margin.
The movie started off with an estimated collection of around Rs. 21-22 crores in Tamil Nadu, once again breaking records as the highest first-day earnings for a Tamil film in the current year. This surpasses the earlier record set by Thunivu (Rs. 21 crores). The opening performance resembles the initial earnings of Vikram and PS1 from the previous year, both of which eventually went on to become the highest-grossing films ever in Tamil Nadu. Unfortunately, the film missed out on early morning shows in the state due to new regulations that prohibited screenings before 9 AM. These early shows often contribute significantly to the first-day earnings due to their premium ticket prices. If not for this setback, the film could have easily crossed the Rs. 25 crores mark.
Jailer Makes History: Highest Opening Day Collection for Kollywood in Karnataka
The movie’s success extended beyond Tamil Nadu, performing exceptionally well in other regions. In Karnataka, it achieved a remarkable feat by registering the highest-ever opening day earnings for a Tamil film, with an estimated Rs. 8.75 crores, surpassing the earlier record held by 2.0 (Rs. 7.60 crores). In Kerala, the film secured the third-highest opening day earnings for Kollywood, totaling around Rs. 6 crores, and there’s potential for it to move up to the second position based on actual figures. Similarly, the Telugu states also witnessed Jailer clinching the third-highest opening day collection for Kollywood, trailing only two Rajinikanth films, 2.0 and Kabali.
In addition to its impressive start, what stands out is the positive response from the audience, a factor that was missing in Rajnikanth’s previous two films. The movie is looking forward to a substantial 6-day extended weekend, further boosted by the significant Independence Day holiday falling on Tuesday. The advance ticket sales for this period show considerable strength. To put it simply, all the elements are aligned for the movie to make a significant impact and perform remarkably well.
