Raja Shivaji Sells 65,000 Tickets In National Chains, Rs 12 Crore Opening Day On The Cards For Riteish Deshmukh’s Epic

A 65,000-ticket haul in national chains is not the kind of release-day headline Marathi cinema lands every Friday, and Raja Shivaji has done exactly that. Riteish Deshmukh’s historical epic entered May 1 with exceptional pre-release momentum, giving the film a commanding launchpad and putting it firmly in the conversation for one of the biggest openings seen for a Marathi title in the state market. In fact, the movie recorded better sales in non-national chains due to regional connections. It sold around 12,000 tickets in Miraj Cinemas and around 10,000 tickets in MovieMax. Mass centres are performing insanely well, which can be a defining moment for the Marathi film. It is solid in national chains too, but it kept on growing stronger and stronger in the interiors.

The final advance booking trend reflected strong traction across Maharashtra, with a major chunk of the national chain business coming from PVR Inox. Just as importantly, the film’s momentum did not stay limited to premium urban pockets. It also generated healthy movement in regional centres, pointing to broad-based audience interest and a release-day turnout that had scale written all over it.

A Big Opening Gives The Epic Its First Victory

On current trends, Raja Shivaji is eyeing an opening day in the Rs 12 crore range in Maharashtra, with the Hindi version expected to add to its overall launch. For a Marathi film mounted as a large theatrical event, that is a striking start and a clear sign that the title has converted interest into real ticket sales before its first day is fully done.

Directed by Riteish Deshmukh, the film is a historical action drama based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Backed by Mumbai Film Company and Jio Studios, and produced by Genelia Deshmukh and Jyoti Deshpande, Raja Shivaji features an ensemble that includes Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Genelia Deshmukh, Fardeen Khan, Boman Irani, and Jitendra Joshi. At its core, the film revisits the rise of the Maratha warrior king and presents that journey as a full-scale theatrical spectacle.

That early box office promise carries extra weight because Raja Shivaji is far more than another release on Riteish Deshmukh’s résumé. The film places him at the centre of a culturally significant story and ties the opening-day response directly to his biggest creative swing in years.

Why This Opening Matters For Riteish Deshmukh

After balancing commercial entertainers and digital outings in recent years, Riteish has returned here with a project that puts his authorship front and centre as both lead actor and director. That makes the audience response especially meaningful. This is not an ensemble comedy or a familiar franchise appearance. Raja Shivaji demands that he shoulder a large-scale period film, headline a deeply rooted historical narrative, and define its dramatic identity from behind the camera as well. With Dhamaal 4 also on his confirmed 2026 slate, Raja Shivaji stands as the most ambitious film of his current career phase and the strongest statement of intent in his recent body of work.
