According to the New York Times, actor Alec Baldwin inadvertently murdered cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injured writer-director Joel Souza when he discharged a pretend gun on the set of a movie.
“We’re trying to determine right now how and what type of projectile was used in the firearm,” Juan Rios, a spokesman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office, told NYT.
Halyna was taken to the University of New Mexico Facility in Albuquerque, but she died, and Souza is now undergoing emergency care at a different hospital.
The film Rust, which is a western, has been halted in production. Baldwin is both the producer and the star of the film. According to a press statement from the New Mexico Film Office, the film would not begin shooting until early November.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reported, citing the Associated Press, that Baldwin was seen crying outside the sheriff’s office on Thursday.
Rust is a story of a 13-year-old kid who must care for himself and his younger brother when his parents die in the 1880s in Kansas. After being ordered to be hung for inadvertently killing a rancher, he goes on the run with his grandfather (Baldwin).
