Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest, most celebrated, and most successful filmmakers on this planet. His films successfully bridge the gap between blockbuster filmmaking with commercial sensibilities. His upcoming film, the biographical historical drama Oppenheimer is the most awaited film across the globe and not just in India. Recently, the film was sent for a certificate to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Ahead of the film’s release on 21 July, advance booking in India has been impressive and it is expected to do extremely well on its opening day. It is also Nolan’s first R-rated film since 2002’s Insomnia, mainly because of an explicit sex scene. But in India, the makers themselves removed these scenes from the film keeping in mind Indian sensibilities.
According to reports, the makers knew that the censor board in India won’t allow such scenes even with an A (adult) certificate. So they have smartly removed those scenes in a way that won’t affect the viewer’s experience. “The CBFC only asked to mute the word ‘a*****e’ and to also remove it from the subtitles. Once it was done, the film was awarded a U/A certificate,” the source said.
Bhagwat Gita Scene Has Been Retained
It is a world-renowned fact that J. Robert Oppenheimer read the Indian text of the Bhagwat Gita and was heavily inspired by it. He even quote one of its lines after America dropped nuclear bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. In the film, there is a scene where Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh) makes Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) read from the Bhagavad Gita while the two engage in sex. Contrary to the belief, the CBFC surprisingly retained that scene. The certification was given on 19 July just a few hours before the press screening.
