The wait is almost over! Maddock Films has officially started the countdown for its next big horror-comedy, Thamma. The film, which brings together the fresh pairing of Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, is all set to hit cinemas worldwide in just 9 days, on October 21, making it a big Diwali release.
Coming from the makers of hits like Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya, the excitement for Thamma is already very high. The film promises to be the first proper love story in the spooky universe, mixing romance and horror with comedy and action.
Based On Indian Folklore, Not The West
Ever since the film was announced, many fans have been calling it “India’s answer to The Vampire Diaries.” However, the film’s writer, Niren Bhatt, has clarified that their inspiration is purely Indian. He explained that while vampire stories exist in every culture, the team wanted to tell a story based on our own rich mythology.
Bhatt said that our culture has had these stories for thousands of years, mentioning the famous tales of Vikram and Betal from the Singhasan Battisi. He pointed out that these legends came way before Western stories like The Vampire Diaries or Twilight. So, instead of copying the West, Thamma will bring our own folk tales to the big screen in a new and exciting way.
A Spooky Love Story Across Time
The story of Thamma is set across two different timelines: modern-day Delhi and the ancient city of Vijayanagar. Ayushmann Khurrana plays a historian who is studying Indian vampire folklore, while Rashmika Mandanna is his love interest, who might have a supernatural connection of her own.
The film also features a powerful cast, including Nawazuddin Siddiqui who will be playing a vampire, alongside veteran actor Paresh Rawal. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, the film is being presented as a unique cocktail of genres. It aims to give the audience a thrilling experience that is both scary and romantic.
