The master of the grand Indian family drama, Sooraj Barjatya, has officially confirmed his next directorial venture. In a recent interview, the filmmaker revealed that he has begun shooting for his next film, which will star a fresh lead pairing of Ayushmann Khurrana and Sharvari. The confirmation has put an end to months of speculation and has also ignited a new question: Will Ayushmann be the next actor to portray the iconic character of ‘Prem’?
“A Dedicated And Fine Actor”
Speaking to PTI, Barjatya confirmed that shooting for the Mumbai-set story is already underway. He showered praise on his new leading man, describing Ayushmann as a “dedicated and fine actor.” Staying true to his signature style, the director also shared that the film will feature a large ensemble cast. “Besides them, we’ve more people in the cast, like how we’ve it in all my films,” he stated, emphasizing his focus on getting the right cast to tell a real and relatable story.
The Enduring ‘Nervousness’ Of A Veteran
Despite having a celebrated career spanning decades with classics like Maine Pyaar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Barjatya admitted that he still feels a sense of “nervousness” before every film shoot. He shared that this feeling has remained with him since his very first movie.
“As a creator, it’s not about how much box office (numbers) it will do, it’s about whether you’re able to connect or not, with that thought or scene,” he explained. The veteran director stressed that his biggest challenge is to create an honest world that audiences can connect with, reiterating his commitment to making family-centric films.
The Big Question: Is Ayushmann The New Prem?
While Barjatya kept the character details under wraps, strong media reports suggest that this upcoming family drama will see Ayushmann Khurrana taking on the legendary mantle of ‘Prem’. The character name was immortalized by superstar Salman Khan, who played Prem in many of Barjatya’s biggest blockbusters. For generations of moviegoers, the name is synonymous with the values and charm of a Rajshri hero, making the prospect of Ayushmann stepping into those shoes a massive point of discussion for fans.
