A R Rahman is easily one of the biggest and most influential music composers not just in Bollywood but in Indian cinema. In a long and successful career, he has composed music and background scores for several acclaimed films in Hindi and Tamil cinema. Rahman was also bestowed with the Oscar for composing Jai Ho for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire.
However, despite working extensively in Bollywood, Rahman has never lived in Mumbai. Instead, he chose to stay in Chennai with his family and works from his own space. In a recent interview, the talented musician talked about the reason behind it.
A R Rahman Didn’t Relocate To Mumbai Because Of The Underworld
In the interview, Rahman talked about the 1990s when he started his career. It was also the peak of the underworld mafia that was operating in Mumbai. Rahman said that a producer offered him a big house if he left Chennai. “I remember in 1994, a big producer from Andhra Pradesh said he’d give me a massive place in Banjara Hills if I moved out from Chennai. I just smiled at him. Later, when I found prominence up North, Subhash Ghai asked me to learn Hindi as people there love me and I should know the language. But that was the time of the underworld mafia culture in Mumbai, so I didn’t even consider it.”

A R Rahman Also Talked About Living In The US And UK
In the same interview, Rahman also said that despite living temporarily in the US and UK, he always came back to Chennai. He said, “A few years later, I was working in England, but my wife barely spent three months in the UK before she wanted to run back to India. Then, came the US, and we even bought a house there as everyone loved it. But this time I put my foot down and we all returned home.”
Underworld Was Reigning Terror Around That Time
Back in the 1990s, the underworld was reigning terror in Mumbai with shootouts taking place almost every other day. Almost every other big film personality around that time would get extortion calls. T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar was shot dead after he refused to pay the extortion to Abu Salem. Karan Johar was also threatened by the underworld when Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was released.
