Aamir Khan had one of his most vulnerable public moments in Singapore this week, and it came while reflecting on something far bigger than stardom. Accepting the Screen Icon Award at the Singapore International Film Festival, the actor opened up about the personal cost of spending three decades in nonstop work mode, then followed that emotional confession with a significant update on 3 Idiots.
Speaking during an onstage conversation, Khan recalled how the COVID-19 lockdown forced him to confront the years he had lost with family. “When I was sitting in COVID and I was thinking, I said, you know, about 30 years have passed of my life. And it’s okay to work like a madman, completely obsessed with what you’re doing for one year, two years, five years. But if it goes on for 30 years, I mean, you’ve lost your relationships. Your kids have grown up, they’re adults now. So I felt a deep sense of loss,” Khan said.
He added, “I’m so glad that this thought occurred to me when I was 56 and not when I was 86, when it would be really too late to do anything about it.”
A Big 3 Idiots Sequel Update
The most headline-making reveal from the evening was Khan’s update on 3 Idiots. Asked if a sequel to Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster is moving forward, the actor confirmed that the project has indeed progressed at the writing stage.
“Well, I’m not allowed to say a lot,” Khan said. “I think I can say this much, that yes, Raju is working on the script. In fact, hopefully once I’m back in the next couple of weeks, he’s going to narrate the final version to me. So, fingers crossed.”
That is the clearest public indication yet that the long-discussed follow-up is actively taking shape.
What He Said About Andaz Apna Apna 2
Khan was also asked about Andaz Apna Apna, the 1994 cult comedy that continues to enjoy a devoted fan following. His answer was brief, but it was still enough to keep sequel chatter alive.
“Well, I know that Raj Santoshi is working on something,” he said. “So let’s see what happens.” When pressed for more, Khan replied, “Yeah, that’s all.”
The actor also revisited one of the toughest stretches of his early career, when several films failed after the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. “At that time, mentally and emotionally, I felt like I’m in quicksand. I’m sinking slowly, and the more I’m struggling to get out, the deeper I’m going,” he said.
Aamir Khan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Khan was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, which released on June 20, 2025. The film, directed by R. S. Prasanna and co-starring Genelia D’Souza, marked his return to a lead role after Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. He also made a special appearance in Coolie in 2025 and had producer credits on Laapataa Ladies in 2023.
Looking ahead, Khan is attached as producer to Batwara 1947, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and slated for release on August 14, 2026. With 3 Idiots now back in active conversation and fresh interest around Andaz Apna Apna, the actor’s next phase suddenly looks much busier.
