Aamir Khan And Ashutosh Gowariker Reunite For Lala Amarnath Biopic 25 Years After Lagaan

A quarter century after Lagaan transformed cricket into one of Hindi cinema’s most stirring emotional canvases, Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker are reuniting for another period sports drama, this time inspired by the life of cricket great Lala Amarnath. The pairing alone carries the weight of memory, but the subject gives this collaboration a fresh historical urgency.

Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that the film is being developed as a biographical drama on Lala Amarnath, the first Indian cricketer to score a Test century for India in 1933 and independent India’s first cricket captain. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition, giving the film an emotional and political sweep that reaches far beyond the boundary line.

A Partition Era Cricket Epic Takes Shape

The project is in an advanced stage of development, with several script reading sessions already completed. The screenplay has also received creative inputs from Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, a detail that adds further heft to a film already mounted on an ambitious emotional scale.

The makers are targeting a September 2026 start for production, with pre-production work now underway. At this stage, the focus is on shaping the world of the film and locking its creative vision. That careful approach underlines the scale and seriousness of a reunion that already feels like one of the most significant Hindi film developments in this space.

For Aamir, the film marks a return to cricket on screen after Lagaan, still regarded as one of the most defining sports dramas in Indian cinema. For Gowariker, it is a return to the expansive period storytelling space that also shaped films like Jodhaa Akbar and Mohenjo Daro.

Why Lala Amarnath Fits This Reunion So Well

Lala Amarnath’s life offers the kind of dramatic material that lends itself powerfully to the big screen. He was central to India’s early cricketing identity, scored the country’s first Test hundred, and later captained India in a defining phase of its sporting history. His journey was also deeply touched by Partition, which gives the film a human core alongside its sporting triumphs.

That blend of history, identity and resilience makes the subject especially compelling for this duo. Lagaan once used cricket to tell a larger story about spirit and resistance. This new film brings Aamir and Gowariker back to that rich emotional territory through the life of a real figure whose legacy is woven into the birth of Indian cricket itself.

What This Reunion Means For Aamir Khan Now

The film arrives at a particularly interesting moment in Aamir Khan’s career. His last acting release was Sitaare Zameen Par in 2025, while Laal Singh Chaddha released in 2022. As a producer, he remained active with Laapataa Ladies in 2024, but this collaboration places him back in a sweeping character-driven narrative mounted on an epic canvas.

That is what gives the announcement its extra charge. Beyond nostalgia, the Lala Amarnath biopic reconnects Aamir with a genre, a filmmaker and an emotional register that have already delivered one of the most enduring films of his career. With Lahore 1947 also among the key upcoming titles from his banner, this reunion now stands as one of the most compelling projects in his current creative phase.
