“Gyaan Mat Baato”: Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Promo During IPL Final Sparks Backlash, Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia Reacts

Aamir Khan’s surprise appearance during the IPL 2025 final to promote Sitaare Zameen Par drew mixed reactions, with filmmaker Rahul Dholakia calling out the actor’s commentary stint for being preachy and biased towards RCB.

Aamir Khan Faces Mixed Reactions After IPL 2025 Commentary Appearance

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan surprised fans by entering the IPL 2025 final not only as a spectator but also the commentary box at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3. But not everyone was impressed.

Aamir is preparing for the much-anticipated release of Sitaare Zameen Par. During a high-octane one-day, he seized control of the commentary position with the intention of promoting his film while engaging in cricket dialogue. While cross-promoting cinema during India’s biggest sporting event is not new, viewers felt that it missed the mark this time.

Aamir Calls Virat Kohli A ‘Perfectionist’

In his comments in the commentary box, Aamir compared himself to Virat Kohli, calling the RCB star a “perfectionist”.

“He reminds me of myself in many ways. The discipline, the intensity — it’s like watching an artist in action,” Aamir said.

Although fans of both the actor and cricketer found the comparison flattering, others felt it was self-serving and an inappropriate discussion during a major match.

Filmmaker Rahul Dholakia Slams Aamir’s Commentary

After Aamir’s appearance, filmmaker Rahul Dholakia was less than impressed and responded with criticism on X (formerly Twitter):

“Yaar picture ka promotion karo, gyaan mat baato.”

While he subsequently deleted the tweet, screenshots quickly went viral, and many were quick to echo his sentiments. And, of course, critics claimed that Aamir used the commentary box to promote the film rather than provide authentic cricket commentary.

Audience Reaction: Mixed At Best

Twitter was also divided. Some users called Aamir’s presence “charming” and “thoughtful”, while others felt the timing of the tweet was not ideal.

“Cricket is cricket. Don’t inject movie PR into it,” wrote one user on X.
Another user posted, “Felt more like a Sitaare Zameen Par promo than the IPL final!”

Aamir Khan‘s comment about RCB’s journey and supporting Virat Kohli also didn’t sit well with fans of rival teams. #RCBBias started trending, while rival fans were not optimistic about celebrities coming to support players while they are in action — keeping in mind that sports and celebrity cameos should be neutral territory.

A Closer Look At Sitaare Zameen Par

Aamir’s upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, the spiritual successor of his 2007 acclaimed Taare Zameen Par, is all set to be released on June 20, 2025.

The film tells stories about special needs children and their journey through sports, with Aamir playing a coach who helps kids rediscover their identity and self-worth.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

While Sitaare Zameen Par remains one of the most anticipated films of 2025, Aamir Khan’s IPL final marketing pre-event strategy has more mixed buzz. His intention was clearly to take advantage of cricket’s immense reach, but the tone and execution felt more “gyaan” than glam.

Aamir, being one of the sharpest minds in Bollywood, will take stock for sure. The film’s messaging feels strong, meanwhile — but next time, let the pitch be for the players and skip the promos on a commentary mic.
