Aamir Khan Begins Dramatic Weight Loss For Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lalkaara, 25 Years After Lagaan

Aamir Khan has stepped into another demanding transformation phase, and this one comes with the weight of history behind it. The actor has begun a major weight loss programme for Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lalkaara, reuniting with the filmmaker nearly 25 years after Lagaan became one of Hindi cinema’s defining sports dramas.

What makes the development especially striking is the role itself. Aamir is preparing to play a 25 year old in Lalkaara, a decision that raises the bar on both performance and physical preparation, and once again places him in the kind of deeply committed character space that audiences closely associate with his finest work.

Aamir Khan’S Youth Transformation Sets The Tone For Lalkaara

The transformation is already underway. As the source material notes, a source close to the development said, “Aamir Khan is on a massive weight-loss programme for Ashutosh Gowariker’s next film. Touted as a sports drama, Lalkaara will see the actor playing a 25-year-old. Aamir is known to go all out when it comes to physically transforming for a role, and this time too, he is putting in a great deal of work to look convincing.” The quote neatly captures why the update has generated immediate interest, because the physical change is not being treated as a cosmetic add on but as a central part of making the character believable.

Written by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh, Lalkaara is set against the backdrop of Indian cricket while also engaging with rivalry, friendship and patriotism. The film further explores the human impact of Partition through the life of one of India’s pioneering cricket figures, giving the material both sporting sweep and emotional depth.

That combination also explains why the Aamir and Gowariker reunion carries such obvious curiosity. Lagaan in 2001 fused sport, identity and period storytelling with rare conviction, and Lalkaara appears to revisit some of that emotional terrain through a very different historical lens.

With that scale and character challenge in place, the film also arrives at a revealing moment in Aamir’s career, making its timing just as compelling as its premise.

Why Lalkaara Lands At A Pivotal Time In Aamir Khan’S Career

Aamir’s recent screen journey has been unusually varied, which makes Lalkaara feel like a particularly meaningful next move. After Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, he returned to theatres with Sitaare Zameen Par in 2025, a sports comedy drama directed by R. S. Prasanna and co starring Genelia Deshmukh. He also made a special appearance in Coolie in 2025. In 2026, his presence continued with Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, while Aamir Khan Productions backed Batwara 1947, which released on August 13, 2026. Seen in that context, Lalkaara stands out as a film that leans squarely into the performance heavy, transformation led space that has long been central to Aamir’s screen identity, and that is exactly what makes this reunion with Gowariker feel so significant now.
