Why does Aamir Khan keep betting on remakes despite mixed results? From Laal Singh Chaddha to Loveyapa and now Ek Din, Aamir Khan Productions seems committed to adapting foreign films for Indian audiences. While some have worked, others have failed badly, raising questions about the production house’s creative choices.
The Remake Track Record
Aamir Khan’s tryst with remakes has been a rollercoaster. Laal Singh Chaddha, the official adaptation of Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, released in August 2022 with massive expectations. The film tanked at the box office, collecting just Rs 58 crore in India against a reported budget of Rs 180 crore. The actor himself admitted his performance let the film down.
The pattern continued with Loveyapa, produced under for Aamir’s son Junaid Khan. The romantic comedy was a remake of the 2022 Tamil hit Love Today. Despite releasing ahead of Valentine’s Day 2025, the film emerged as a box office bomb. It collected just Rs 6.50 crore in its first week against a reported budget of Rs 60 crore, recovering only 26 percent of its investment.
Sitaare Zameen Par Escapes The Curse
Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan’s 2025 release, broke the losing streak. The film, a remake of the 2018 Spanish film Champions, collected Rs 268 crore worldwide and emerged as a hit. However, the film faced criticism online for being a remake, with some calling it a frame by frame copy of the original. Despite the success, the remake tag continued to follow the production house.
Ek Din Continues The Pattern
Now, Aamir Khan Productions has announced Ek Din starring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi. The romantic drama is a remake of the 2016 Thai film One Day. The first look poster drew comparisons to the original, with fans pointing out the similar look and situation. The film is scheduled to release on May 1, 2026.
The question remains: why does Aamir Khan Productions keep choosing remakes? The production house has delivered original hits like Dangal and Laapataa Ladies in the past. Yet, the reliance on proven foreign stories continues, especially for Junaid Khan’s projects.
