Aamir Khan Reflects On A Deleted Plot Point From Dhoom 3: Adi and Victor “Removed It… I Think That Was a Mistake”

Aamir Khan, currently drawing attention with his film Sitaare Zameen Par, has opened up about Dhoom 3 (2013), admitting that key cuts to the original script were a mistake that impacted the film’s emotional core.

Dhoom 3: A missed emotional arc

In a candid conversation with Mashable India, Aamir revealed that the character of Sweety Dixit—Jai Dixit’s wife from the first two Dhoom films—was intended to return in Dhoom 3. Originally, the narrative began with her filing for divorce due to Jai’s neglect, immediately grounding the film in emotional stakes. But producer Aditya Chopra and director Vijay Krishna Acharya ultimately decided to drop the plot thread, opting not to shoot those scenes. Aamir remarked that this was a mistake.

“Adi aur Victor ko laga woh zaruri nahi hai toh unhone nikaal diya… mere hisaab se woh unhone galati ki”

The emotionally driven beginnings

Aamir elaborated that in the original version, Sweety’s character was unhappy—Jai missed key moments like birthdays and Karva Chauth—and was on the brink of separation. Jai tries to win her back, promising a belated honeymoon, but is abruptly pulled away to chase the antagonist in Chicago. This turn gives deeper complexity to Jai’s character, with Sweety telling him not to return until justice is served—a poignant emotional catalyst missing from the final cut.

What we saw instead

When Dhoom 3 hit theaters, fans saw a slick, high-octane heist thriller starring Aamir in a double role, alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. It was a record-breaking success at the box office—grossing nearly ₹557 crore globally—but failed to resonate as deeply with critics and audiences, lacking the emotional depth many felt it needed.

Aamir’s Reflection On Dhoom 3 Plot

Aamir believes that reinstating the Sweety subplot could’ve anchored the film emotionally, enhancing its core narrative tension. His comments suggest a regret over the dilution of character-driven storytelling in favor of spectacle.

While Dhoom 4 remains unconfirmed—with Yash Raj Films clarifying that no script or casting has been finalized —Aamir’s insight highlights an often overlooked aspect: strong emotional undercurrents can elevate even blockbuster franchises into something more memorable.
