In an uncommonly candid and brutally honest confession, Aamir Khan has created a stir by saying that he once turned down Swades — a movie that many see now as a Shah Rukh Khan classic — because he thought it was “boring”. But as the internet has a habit of doing, fans are not letting this go lightly, and Twitter has been inundated with trolls and praise — not for Aamir, but for SRK, the man who made it iconic.

Aamir’s Take on Swades: “I Got Bored…”
While talking with Zoom, Aamir recounted that Swades — original title Kaveri Amma — was pitched to him by director Ashutosh Gowariker while he was making Lagaan. After hearing about the idea for the movie, Aamir said that he found the final narration “just very boring”.
“It was a three hour narration. I told Ashu, ‘I got bored. What you’re trying to say is noble and important, but if you say it in such a boring way… I got bored,'” Aamir said.
He even confessed that he has not seen Swades up until today, but he did say that people loved SRK’s acting.
Netizens Can’t Hold Back
Social media blew up with the clip of the interview. While some praised Aamir for his honesty, many others were quick to point out what came off as a tone-deaf take on a film that has profoundly impacted millions.
The phrase “Mohan Bhargava >>> Every NASA rejection Aamir ever did” even trended for a brief bit on X (formerly Twitter).
Swades: The Film Aamir Passed On, but SRK Immortalized
Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and with AR Rahman‘s evergreen music, Swades follows a NASA scientist who returns to India to reconnect with his roots. It is a deeply personal, social critique of brain drain and rural development.
While it underperformed at the box office in 2004, it found incredibly big love through the years and is now considered one of SRK’s most powerful and restrained performances. Aamir’s “boring” comment simply opened up the conversation again about how cinema is defined by the right actor.
Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Aamir Khan’s candidness about the decision to turn down Swades might actually be admirable, but his calling it “boring” definitely raised some eyebrows among fans. If anything, the outrage shows how much fans love the film, 20 years later.
Typically, Aamir has often affected Bollywood in one way or another, which is why this one was lucky that he avoided. Because Shah Rukh Khan did not merely accept this role… he made it poetry.
