Aamir Khan, who has been on a break from acting since his last release, Laal Singh Chaddha, is all set to return to the big screen with two exciting projects. According to reports, the superstar will be producing and starring in the remake of the Spanish film Champions, which will go on floors in January 2023. He will also be collaborating with his old friends Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol for a film as a producer that is expected to be announced soon and go on floors around the same time.
Aamir’s comeback to screens with Champions remake
Champions is a 2018 Spanish comedy-drama film directed by Javier Fesser, which tells the story of a disgraced basketball coach who is forced to train a team of intellectually disabled players. The film was a huge success in Spain and won several awards, including three Goya Awards for Best Film, Best New Actor and Best Original Song. Aamir Khan had acquired the rights of the film in 2022 and was planning to act in it, but later decided to step down from the role and focus on producing it. He reportedly roped in Farhan Akhtar to play the lead role, but he was reportedly asked to quit the project because Khan wanted to act in it. Before Farhan, the film was offered to Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.

The film will be directed by RS Prasanna, who has previously helmed films like Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Kalyana Samayal Saadham. A source close to the development told Pinkvilla that the film is ready to go on floors in January and will be a quick 70-day shoot. The source also revealed that Aamir Khan plans to release the film on Christmas 2024.
The actor has planned to start his acting assignment, after his daughter, Ira’s wedding in January. “Champions is presenting in the casting stage and is ready to hit the floors on January 20. The prep work is also in progress too,” the source said.
Aamir Khan’s collaboration with Rajkumar Santoshi
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan is also in talks with Rajkumar Santoshi for another film, starring Sunny Deol which will mark the actor-director reunion. The duo has worked on many films like Damini (of ‘dhai kilo ka haath’ fame), Ghayal and Ghatak. Deol and Santoshi parted ways after a reported bitter fallout after their third movie in 1996. However, they had a fallout over creative differences and did not collaborate for a long time.
Now, it seems that they have buried the hatchet and are ready to work together again. Sunny Deol has recently made a comeback with the blockbuster Gadar 2, which was directed by Anil Sharma.
“Sunny and Rajkumar Santoshi have been discussing a probable collaboration for a while now, and with Aamir Khan on board as a producer, the film is on track to go on floors. Aamir is a creative force to reckon with and he has loved what Rajkumar Santoshi developed for Sunny Deol. The trio is looking to take the film on floors around December/January 2024,” revealed a source close to the development.
The film is said to be titled Jisne Lahore Nahi Dekha, which is Santoshi’s dream project that he had conceived with Anil Kapoor in 2008. However, the film never took off due to various reasons. According to a media report, Aamir Khan has shown interest in the project and has agreed to back it. The film is expected to be a historical drama set during the Partition of India.
Aamir Khan is likely to announce his collaboration with Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol on Sunny Deol’s birthday on October 19, 2023. The film will be produced by Aamir Khan Productions and will go on floors in January.

As per reports, the key character will be a vigilante taking a stand against society. “Aamir, Santoshi, and Sunny had a long meeting last evening and have come on the same page with regard to finances and shooting timelines. The 3-month marathon shooting is expected to begin in January,” the source shared. On calling it a wrap on the Sunny Deol film, Rajkumar Santoshi will begin his work on his next which has Aamir Khan in lead role.
Aamir Khan is also considering to produce and act in Ujjwal Nikam biopic to be directed by Avinash Arun.
