Aamir Khan has achieved a lot in his career, but he’s never won the National Award for Best Actor. He was offered the role of Bhagat Singh in the 2002 film The Legend of Bhagat Singh, which could have earned him this award. However, Khan chose not to take the role. His decision highlights his commitment to authenticity in his work.
In a recent appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Khan opened up about why he chose not to take on the role of Bhagat Singh.
Aamir Khan Felt Someone ‘Young’ Should Play Bhagat Singh
He explained that, at the age of 40, he felt he wouldn’t be able to convincingly portray the youthful essence of the revolutionary leader. Bhagat Singh, known for his fearless actions and profound statements at just 22 or 23 years old, required an actor who could embody that youthful bravery and conviction.
Khan said, “Bhagat Singh ji is a very important historical figure. He was a unique human being. What he did at the age of 22-23, we can’t even think about it. His courage. He was fearless. That’s a very rare quality. Its beauty was that you see a young 23-year-old on the witness stand, whose moustache has not sprouted, making such big statements. If I stood there, I was already turning 40 at the time, it wouldn’t have looked good. That quality of a young guy saying such things won’t come to me. I told Raj (Rajkumar Santoshi) to cast some young boy in his early twenties. That is Bhagat Singh. That’s why I didn’t do it.”
Rajkumar Santoshi Ignored Aamir’s Feeback By Casting Ajay As Bhagat Singh
Director Rajkumar Santoshi, however, did not follow Khan’s suggestion and instead cast Ajay Devgn in the role. Devgn’s portrayal of Bhagat Singh was highly praised and earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
As for Khan, he remains focused on his upcoming projects. His next film, Sitaare Zameen Par, is scheduled for release on Christmas 2024.
