After nearly nine years, Fawad Khan is set to make his grand return to Bollywood with Abir Gulaal. The romantic comedy, which stars Fawad alongside Vaani Kapoor, has completed production and is slated for release in 2025. This marks Fawad’s first Hindi film since Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).
Abir Gulaal: Plot Details
Abir Gulaal tells the story of two people wounded by their pasts who find healing in each other. Vaani Kapoor plays Gulaal, a lively girl from Jaipur, while Fawad portrays Abir, an Indian chef living in London. The film’s title is inspired by the names of the characters, adding a poetic touch to the narrative.
Filming Was Fast Paced, Shot In London
According to media reports, filming kicked off in London in late September. Despite a tight 40-day schedule, the shoot wrapped up in just 37 days, showcasing the efficiency of the cast and crew. The supporting cast features talented actors like Lisa Haydon, Farida Jalal, Parmeet Sethi, and Soni Razdan.
Though the team initially planned to film some scenes in Mumbai, the film’s story is set in London. This led to the decision to shoot entirely in the British city. The film’s aesthetic was designed by Indian designer Sheetal Sharma, with Indian technicians ensuring the film’s cultural authenticity.
Currently in post-production, the film still requires some remote dubbing from Fawad Khan. Producer Vivek B. Agrawal, known for hits like Udta Punjab and Vikram Vedha, is hopeful that Abir Gulaal will resonate with audiences both in India and abroad.
Film Set For Release In Summer 2025
Makers are yet to announce the release date. It is being planned for a Summer 2025 release.
Abir Gulaal also marks a new phase in Bollywood-Pakistan collaborations. Following a break after the 2016 Uri attack, cross-border partnerships were put on hold. However, a landmark decision by the Bombay High Court in 2023 allowed such collaborations to resume & foster cultural harmony.
